Paul Ryan deletes tweet about tax cuts after Twitter backlash

Paul Ryan deletes tweet about tax cuts after Twitter backlash

US House Speaker Paul Ryan came under fire Saturday over a tweet that framed a worker's $1.50 per week pay increase as an impressive result of his party's massive tax cut plan, US media reported.

Ryan presumably saw this as a proud win for the GOP, which is why he tweeted, along with the article: "A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA, said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up $1.50 a week... she said [that] will more than cover her Costco membership for the year".

In the words of Michael Scott, "Boom". A Costco membership, the Gold Star package-the tier which provides the least benefits- costs $60 a year, which is presumably what Ketchum's $78 annual raise can cover. Why the House Speaker chose to highlight Julia Ketchum of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and her $1.50 a week savings, the world may never know. She said she was "really surprised" that Ryan highlighted her comment.

The following message was tweeted out from Ryan's account on Saturday morning and then was subsequently deleted after it became clear how poorly it was being received.

Ryan tweeted about the GOP tax overhaul and within no time, faced a huge backlash on Twitter.

NK's ceremonial leader to lead high-level delegation to S. Korea
Besides athletes, North Korea has also agreed to send hundreds of musicians and entertainers to the games, which end February 25. Later Saturday, North Korean short-track speed skater Jong Kwang Bom practiced at the arena's main ice rink.

But Democrats, who were quick to round on Ryan, pointed out that wealthier Americans and big corporations benefit much more from the tax cuts. The top 1 percent, on the other hand, would still get a tax cut of $20,660.

Former George W. Bush ethics lawyer, Richard W. Painter said that Ryan "should be ashamed of himself" for publishing the tweet.

However, despite the "good news" that Ryan has since deleted, the Speaker was fried on Social media. "Chip in $1.50 now to help us repeal and replace Ryan permanently this November", Bryce tweeted.

A number of Twitter users had basic math questions for Ryan - including asking where the money itself went. "Can we have our 1.5 TRILLION back now?" another wrote.
