Google Announces Plans To Join Nest With In-House Hardware Team

Nest co-founder Matt Rogers announced on Twitter today that he'll be leaving the smart home company. "It just makes sense to be developing them together", Osterloh told CNET in an interview. This has proven to be quite foolish, as it has seemingly slowed Google's innovation in the smart home market. Thankfully Google made the decision to combine the software teams of the two companies back in December 2016, which led to Android Things. Current Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz will report directly to Osterloh and further consolidates Google's hardware platforms. Google is trying grew its own advancements before anybody else does - particularly Amazon. However, during that time, the company developed different versions of its thermostat, and re-imagined its acquisition of Dropcam technology into a product called Nest Cam. Originally, Nest was supposed to be the core of Google's hardware efforts, but instead Google chose to create a separate division to produce its Nexus, Pixel, Chromecast, and Google Home devices.

Nest device sales represented a big chunk of revenue for Alphabet's "Other Bets" division, which brought in $1.2 Billion a year ago.

Questions surrounding Nest's place in the Google universe have swirled since the mega-company acquired it in 2014. "The goal is to supercharge Nest's mission", they wrote in a blog post published concurrently on Nest's and Google's 'The Keyword' blogs.

U.S. says Syria may be developing new types of chemical weapons
The officials say it's "highly likely" that Syria kept a stockpile of weapons. It was followed by missile strikes by U.S. military on a Syrian air base.

Previously, Nest operated under Alphabet's "Other Bets" group of projects. However this seems to be mostly done for formality purposes because according to Google, since both teams already work so closely with each other, there will be little disruption, if at all.

In essence, Google is emulating Amazon here. Apple will release its HomePod speaker, with Siri as assistant, this week. Nest first created smart thermostats that used machine learning to help better regulate temperatures inside houses in order to save energy.

But what difference will merging Nest into Google actually make to customers?
