Twitter's user growth numbers are mixed, making it unclear how successful efforts have been to enhance the user experience with a change to its algorithm that prioritizes the most relevant posts and by expanding the allowable length for tweets to 280 characters. Hitting its first ever profitable quarter is clearly notable news not just for Twitter but for Wall Street too, with the company's shares soaring more than 20 percent in pre-market trading.

Monthly active users: 330 million vs. 332.5 million estimated by FactSet and StreetAccount. The only reason overall user growth has continued is because it remains slow but steady internationally.

Twitter attributed the growth in revenue and profit to improvements to its "core ad offerings" and increased use of online video. Net cash provided by operating activities in the year amounted to Dollars 831 million, an increase from 763 million year-on-year. For the three months ended December 31, it rose 4 percent to 330 million, continuing a trend of low, single-digit growth for the service. (TWTR) on Thursday reported a net profit for the first time and returned to revenue growth.

Earnings per share (EPS) is the portion of a company's profit allocated to each outstanding share of common stock. For the full-year the company plans to see capital expenditures between $375 million and $450 million.

But analysts were split on what lies ahead for the company. In comparison, daily active users (DAUs) grew by 12 per cent in the quarter. "This is all about really looking at the potential of revenue growth as they scale and leverage their cost structure", he said.

"Q4 was a strong finish to the year", Dorsey said in a press release.

The social media stalwart is also dealing with the fallout of a New York Times investigation which found that a company called Devumi had sold millions of fake followers to celebrities, athletes and politicians.

"We're not going to have to do any backfilling", Dorsey said. (NYSE:TWTR). Illinois-based Envestnet Asset Mngmt has invested 0.01% in Twitter, Inc.

That came even as social media companies are grappling with a regulatory backlash in Europe and the United States over privacy, possible user addiction, hate speech and alleged abuse of by Russian Federation to sway foreign elections.
