U.S. launches rare strike on Syrian government-backed troops

U.S. launches rare strike on Syrian government-backed troops

Last week, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, responding to reports of renewed gas attacks, warned the Syrian government it would be "ill-advised" to launch more chemical weapons.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had written to the United Nations, demanding worldwide condemnation.

In September 2014, the United States and Arab allies launch air strikes on the IS in Syria, opening a new front in the fight against the jihadist group, already targeted by raids in Iraq.

Following the incident, the Russian command at the air base of Hmeymim established channels of interaction with representatives of the global coalition headquarters, which stated that the local oil refinery was controlled by the SDF and USA military personnel, the statement said.

Regime and SDF fighters were involved in several skirmishes in the area a year ago, as they each conducted parallel operations against some of the Islamic State jihadist group's last bastions.

"Syrian pro-regime forces initiated an unprovoked attack against well-established Syrian Democratic Forces headquarters February 7", the statement reads. Syrian military airstrikes killed at least 230 people, including civilians, according to the United Kingdom -based monitoring group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

What happened in Deir al-Zour?

According to a coalition statement, the airstrikes and artillery shelling were carried out after forces allied with Syrian President Assad "initiated an unprovoked attack" against a Syrian Democratic Forces headquarters, where coalition advisers were cooperating with the US-backed Syrian rebels.

The attack occurred eight kilometers east of the "agreed-upon Euphrates River de-confliction line".

Patriots CB Butler sits in 'coaches decision'
He later wrote: 'Players play and Coaches are supposed to Coach, Bill was out coached for not letting his players play'. This catch was one of the biggest in Super Bowl history and gave Butler some serious cred on his team - and in the NFL.

The coalition "cannot speculate on the exact makeup of the Syrian pro-regime forces who conducted the attack at this time", Veale said.

Pro-regime troops marched on the compound of the SDF in Khusham, Syria, in a "coordinated attack" using artillery, mortar fire and Russian-made tanks, according to a military spokesman. One SDF fighter was injured, the U.S. officials said. There were no American casualties.

Many remember that on September 17, 2016 the Coalition troops attacked the Syrian army on Zardah Mount, in Deir Ezzor province, which facilitated the advance of the extremist group Daesh.

SANA said earlier that forces of the US-led worldwide coalition targeted popular forces that were fighting the Islamic State group and the USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.

Regime forces were likely attempting to take an oilfield near Khusham.

The Omar oil field, one of the biggest in Syria, had a pre-war output of 30,000 barrels per day, while the Conoco gas field had a pre-war capacity of 13 million cubic metres a day.

US-led coalition in Syria killed more than 100 Syrian regime forces on Wednesday in response to an attack on one of its bases.

Syrian state media confirmed the attack, saying "dozens" had been killed or wounded.

The coalition's counter-offensive involved F-22 stealth jets, F-15 fighters, and MQ-9 drones, as well as a U.S. High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
