Binge drinking by the numbers

Binge drinking by the numbers

According to new data from the CDC, each USA binge drinker consumed about 470 drinks in 2015. That works out to almost 470 binge drinks a year for each of the 37.4 million people who reported alcohol binges.

Let's define binge drinking: for men, it's having five or more alcoholic drinks in a two-hour window; women need to drink at least four drinks in that span for it be considered binging.

And half of those total binge drinks were consumed by adults aged 35 or older. This leads to the risk of poor decision-making and injuries, as well as the risk of long-term chronic health problems such as cancer and liver problems. The team then calculated how much drinking happened over the year.

Binge drinkers with lower household incomes (less than $25,000 a year) and lower educational levels (less than high school) consumed substantially more binge drinks per year than those with higher incomes and educational levels.

As stated in the CDC's news release, binge drinking can potentially result in a number of risky actions, including unsafe driving, violence against other people, and irresponsible sexual behavior.

"This study shows that binge drinkers are. greatly increasing their chances of harming themselves and others", said Robert Brewer, M.D., M.S.P.H., lead researcher in CDC's alcohol program. The binge drinkers in the study aged 65 and older, for example, consumed an average of 435 binge drinks each year.

Trump White House pushes back against reports of staff purges, behind-the-scenes chaos
McMaster, but is willing to take his time because he wants to avoid humiliating him as well as to have a successor ready. In private conversations in recent weeks, Trump has reflected on his desire to reshape the administration.

Researchers found that about one in six US adults reported binge drinking an average of about once a week, consuming an average of seven drinks per binge.

When you hear the term "binge drink", what first comes to your mind? That is around 14 billion of those 17.5 billion beverages, and they were drinking about twice as much as women.

For many people, it's a college party.

That is 1 of every 10 deaths in working-age grown-ups - and the greater part are identified with binge drinking. The states with the highest binge drinking levels were Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii. In Wisconsin, Brewer said residents had around 470 million binge drinks. "The findings also show that importance of taking a comprehensive approach to prevent binge drinking, focusing on reducing both the number of times people binge drink and the amount they drink when they binge".

Excessive alcohol use costs the nation around $249 billion, the majority of which can be attributed to binge drinking.
