ICC congratulates Afghanistan and West Indies for qualifying for World Cup 2019

ICC congratulates Afghanistan and West Indies for qualifying for World Cup 2019

Afghanistan emerged as the champions of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers after thrashing Windies in the finals by seven wickets.

In the 34th and final match of the tournament on Sunday, Afghanistan beat the West Indies by seven wickets with a competent display in the field and with the bat to lift the prestigious silverware.

Leg-spin sensation Rashid Khan became the fastest bowler ever to reach 100 one-day worldwide wickets as the West Indies were bowled out for 204, before big-hitting opener Shahzad smashed 84 as Afghanistan knocked off the runs with 9.2 overs to spare.

Afghanistan batsman Mohamad Asghar, right, celebrates after beating Ireland to qualify for the World Cup.

A target of 205 never looked likely to trouble Afghanistan once Shahzad got going and Mohammad Nabi (27 not out) rounded things off in style with three successive sixes off Chris Gayle. Even Afghanistan cricket chief Shafiq Stanikzai apologised to fans for team's debacle.

Rovman Powell hit 44 as the two-time World Cup winners recovered to at least pass 200. After winning both their Super Six matches against the Windies and the United Arab Emirates, they received an unexpected lifeline on Thursday when the UAE held their nerves to shock Zimbabwe by three runs.

The two low-ranking Test teams, West Indies and Zimbabwe, and the two new Test teams, Ireland and Afghanistan, were expected to dominate the proceedings, with the Windies and Afghanistan tipped to go on to England.

Afghanistan, who entered the Super Six second phase of the competition with no points, won all three of their games in that stage to join the West Indies at the finals in England next year.

Porterfield's side do have the luxury of knowing their immediate future as they prepare for their first Test match.

Scotland, the defending ICC Qualifying Round victor, did well to restrict the West Indies to 198, built around solid knocks of 66 and 51 by Ewin Lewis and Marlon Samuels, respectively.

"This trophy is a painful reminder of the dreams we had".

Porterfield added: "I feel sorry for Scotland how it ended for them". Afghanistan's Rashid Khan has been chosen as 12th man.

"We're raring to beat Afghanistan", the in-form all-rounder said ahead of the contest at Harare Sports Club.

Openers Mohammad Shahzad and Gulbadin Naib then put on an 86-run stand for the first wicket to put Afghanistan in a comfortable position.

Simmons said he had been wary of Ireland as he was aware they were formidable foes.
