Facebook updates privacy controls to let you delete your data

Facebook updates privacy controls to let you delete your data

The company is facing unprecedented scrutiny following reports that a data mining firm used ill-gotten data from tens of millions of its users to try to influence elections.

"This product enables third-party data providers to offer their targeting directly on Facebook", product marketing director Graham Mudd said in a statement posted online.

"We remain strongly committed to protecting people's information", said Rob Sherman, deputy chief privacy officer at Facebook. This puts all existing privacy settings options, such as who can see your posts or profile info and who can send you friend requests, for instance, in one place.

Playboy Enterprises says it's pulling its Facebook presence as the privacy scandal enveloping the social media service continues to grow. However, Facebook said the move was taken in order to comply with the incoming GDPR guidelines, due to come into force in May.

Potentially corroborating the aforementioned notions that higher-ups may not be on the same page, or more likely that Facebook is moving fast, the company is stopping the practice of providing anonymized data to third parties, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Facebook has announced updates to its privacy settings to further help people understand the choices they have over their data on Facebook, and put them in more control over their privacy. Large portions of the public were already upset, even angry, with the company for being exploited by Russian operatives during the 2016 election - although what degree of success and effect they had is dubious. Zuckerberg is aware there is intense pressure on him to testify, this person says.

TMC, BJP take out Ram Navami rallies across West Bengal
Peace has been restored with additional police forces patrolling the area, District Magistrate Shashanka Shetty said. Officer in-charge Pramit Ganguly also received head injuries, the officer had said.

Facebook said in a blog post it had been working on the updates for some time but sped things up to appease users' anger over how the company uses data and as lawmakers around the globe call for regulation.

An illustration picture taken on March 22, 2018 in Paris shows a close-up of the Facebook logo in the eye of an AFP staff member posing while she looks at a flipped logo of Facebook.

"Facebook similarly lacks business incentives to engage in responsible data collection because disgruntled advertisers don't have anywhere comparable to go".

The changes won't affect Facebook's privacy policies or the types of data it gathers about its users. The goal this time around is to make the privacy settings easier to find on mobile and better define what data it collects from over 2 billion users on its platform.

The agency could fine Facebook up to $40,000 per violation per day - which could add up quickly with millions of users involved - if it finds the social media giant broke its earlier promises to protect user data, they say. Otherwise, Facebook risks another endless news cycle about it being a detriment to democracy that could trigger reduced user engagement and government intervention.
