Putin, Erdogan Hold Joint Press Conference

Putin, Erdogan Hold Joint Press Conference

Putin made the remarks while holding a press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Tuesday.

Erdogan told the news conference Turkey may cooperate with Russian Federation on defense projects besides the S-400 missile defense system which Moscow has agreed to supply to Ankara. Erdogan said standing next to Putin at the presidential palace in Ankara as he ordered through a video link the launch of the $20 billion dollar Akkuyu nuclear power plant project.

The three countries are sponsoring a series of efforts in a bid to end the seven-year war.

'We are also in close cooperation with Russian Federation to end as soon as possible the terror threat and clashes in Syria, ' Erdogan said.

Following speeches delivered by the two leaders, Turkish Development Minister Lutfi Elvan pressed the button to lay the foundation of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey's southern Mersin province and implemented the agreement signed between Turkish and Russian governments back in 2010.

The project was launched with Erdogan declaiming "in the name of God!" and work immediately began on the site, with the first concrete pouring as celebratory fireworks were set off.

They also blew up many girls' schools and imposed their strict version of Islamic law until they were finally driven out. She was just 15 when she was targeted by the Taliban for her outspoken campaigning over girls' rights to an education.

Speaking at a later news conference with Putin, Erdogan said the cost of the project may exceed the planned $20 billion for the 4,800 megawatt (MW) plant, part of Erdogan's "2023 vision" marking 100 years since the founding of modern Turkey and meant to reduce Turkey's dependence on energy imports.

In addition, government calculations expect the power plant to cover 10 percent of the country's electricity needs when it reaches peak performance.

In late June 2016 the Kremlin says Erdogan has apologised for the jet downing in a message to Putin, in which he calls for a return to friendlier ties. "Turkey is a highly developed state in terms of technology and economics, but this is a new stage in the development of the Turkish economy", Putin said.

Russian Federation and Turkey are also building the TurkStream gas pipeline under the Black Sea that will allow Moscow to pump gas to Europe avoiding Ukraine and increase Turkey's importance as a transit hub.

But Putin refused to discuss the issue saying "these are exclusively commercial questions" rather than political ones.

But Erdogan indicated that Turkey was in no mood to listen to criticism from the West over the purchase.
