Apple hires former Google AI chief to work on Siri

The signers were speaking out against Project Maven, a Pentagon pilot program meant to speed up the Department of Defense's use of artificial intelligence technologies.

It's widely known that Apple's Siri loses a face-off against Google Assistant or even Alexa by Amazon, but things are about to change. It added new features such as advanced photo search and predictive text messages to the iPhone in recent years, but has made little progress, especially compared to Google. It was during his tenure, when AI research became top priority inside Google.

One of Giannandrea challenges should be how to improve Siri, maintaining the high standards of privacy, associated to the Apple products.

The company will also allow users to completely delete their Apple IDs, which was earlier possible only by contacting the company.

Keeping in good company, Giannandrea - at least on LinkedIn - is connected to William Tunstall-Pedoe, a British software developer who invented Evi, one of the first virtual assistants for mobile phones.

Royal wedding: Security plans for Harry and Meghan's big day revealed
"The wedding is expected to attract thousands of people from around the world to Windsor and planning is well under way". Once visitors arrive in Windsor there will be a screening and search regime.

"What I object to is this assumption that we will leap to some kind of super-intelligent system that will then make humans obsolete", said Giannandrea.

The conventional wisdom is that Apple is a laggard in the race to infuse consumer technology with artificial intelligence.

Amazon and Google lead on sales of smart home devices, though Apple still dominates the smartphone market. He will also attract and recruit the top-tier talent that Apple has been lacking.

In an emailed statement to The Hill, a Google spokesperson said that the company appreciated that some of its employees had strong feelings about its defense work, but emphasized that the program does not involve building weapons for the military. On the contrary, the company didn't even publish AI research until 2016, a common practice among AI researchers at Facebook and Google. Apple stresses user privacy to a greater degree than Google, which offers free and ad-supported services with the understanding that Google might use your data to improve its technology. When Giannandrea announced last week that we was stepping down from Google, he was most likely bombarded with job offers.

Engineers with A.I. expertise are some of the most sought-after people in Silicon Valley, with salaries sometimes exceeding eight figures.
