Hungary's Fidesz signals swift NGO crackdown after Orban election win

Hungary's Fidesz signals swift NGO crackdown after Orban election win

With nearly all votes counted, a two-party coalition led by Mr Orban's Fidesz party had captured 134 of 199 seats in parliament, one more than the two thirds of seats required to amend the constitution.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has won a third consecutive term in office on a virulently anti-migration platform, and it's likely that advocates for refugees and asylum-seekers will be among the first casualties of his drive to prevent Hungary from becoming an "immigrant country".

Some other European Union members are likely to view Orban's renewed internal dominance with trepidation, given his repeated run-ins with Brussels institutions over his hardline anti-immigration policies and rejection of the EU's refugee resettlement programme, as well as his moves to clamp down on civil society groups.

German MEP Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann, of the Socialists and Democrats grouping, said Orban had been "very successful with a campaign of fear against migrants".

Salvini, head of the euroskeptic and anti-immigrant League, praised Hungarians and other "European peoples who defend their own companies, their own workers, their own students, their own future and their own borders", at a party event in Udine in northern Italy.

The new laws could make it very hard for groups working with asylum-seekers to continue their activities in Hungary.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Tuesday his landslide re-election had given him a powerful mandate to restrict migrant rights and seek a European Union of independent nations rather than a "United States of Europe".

Over a dozen injured after tour bus crashes in Georgia
He said passengers told authorities the bus had drifted off the edge of the road twice before it veered a third time and crashed. Now we have 7 people in the hospital, instead of at Amen Corner eating a pimento cheese sandwich with an icy cold beer.

As Mr Orban promised to push ahead with reforms, his campaign was criticised as "xenophobic" by official global election monitors yesterday after Mr Orban demonised refugees as "Muslim invaders" and warned of a Jewish conspiracy to dilute Hungary's Christian identity.

"This has happened and we believe we are mandated by this election to pass this law".

Chancellor Angela Merkel's response contrasted sharply with that of Seehofer, who as Bavarian prime minister was her chief antagonist during the migration crisis of 2015-2016. Many hoped that it heralded a possible repeat of a mayoral by-election in the Fidesz stronghold in Hodmezovasarhely in southern Hungary, where strong voter participation swept a single opposition candidate to power in February.

Orban did not directly answer a question about a report from election monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which described campaign rhetoric as "quite hostile and xenophobic".

Orban is fervently anti-migration and based his re-election campaign on the demonization of the mainly Muslim migrants coming to Europe.

"We are grateful for the observations", he said.
