At Least 10 Killed in Taliban Attacks in Afghanistan

At least 13 Afghan security forces have been killed in suspected Taliban attacks in western Herat Province, officials say.

Ramazan Ali Moseni, a deputy chief police in Ghazni province, said 25 Taliban were killed in the gunbattle that started Wednesday night and lasted into the morning.

Mohammad Arif Noori, a spokesman for the governor of Ghazni Province, said that Taliban insurgents attacked the government compound of Khwaja Umari district.

The violence has been on rise as Afghan security forces struggle against a surge in attacks by anti-government fighters since the drawdown of foreign forces within the past three years.

A member of the provincial council, Ghulam Sakhi Amar, said the attackers torched the district governor's office building after removing weapons and other equipment.

In a separate incident north of Kabul, a "sticky" bomb destroyed an oil tanker outside the Bagram military base, where USA forces are stationed.

The insurgent group's spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told the Associated Press that after the attack in Khuja Omari - not far from the provincial capital also called Ghazni - all security posts in the district were under Taliban control. No one immediately took responsibility for the bombing.

The attack occurred in Herat's Shindand district, said the district's governor, Shukrullah Shaker.

However, Tolo News quoted sources as saying that the death toll was more than 10.

Most of the civilians were killed by insurgents, and fewer people were killed by pro-government security forces than previously, said the United Nations quarterly report, noting that suicide bombings accounted for most of the fatalities as well as injuries, which numbered 1,495.

The militants also set off an improvised explosive device (IED) and fired a rocket on responding police unit that arrived at the scene, resulting a police commander killed and four police officers wounded, the official added.

He said eight government security forces were wounded in the fighting.
