The Senate Just Confirmed the Coal Lobbyist Who Could Replace Scott Pruitt

The Senate Just Confirmed the Coal Lobbyist Who Could Replace Scott Pruitt

A former senior aide to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has given congressional investigators a detailed list of what he describes as Pruitt's wasteful spending and unethical behavior, according to a letter signed Thursday by Democrats in both houses of Congress.

Kevin Chmielewski, the EPA's deputy chief of staff and a former staffer on President Trump's campaign, told Democratic lawmakers investigating Pruitt's questionable conduct that working under him has been like a "nightmare".

Two years ago, Kevin Chmielewski was a Donald Trump campaign aide who was working tirelessly to ensure that the NY businessman became America's 45th president. Past year he spent a staggering $3 million on travel, and today he's reportedly protected by security force of 19 agents and a fleet of at least 19 vehicles, paid for by taxpayers, even though the EPA can't explain why Pruitt needs unprecedented protection like that.

The EPA did not immediately respond to Ars' request for comment.

Other Republicans, including the chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, said they were confident that Wheeler will be a good addition to the agency.

When asked about the coin design, however, EPA spokesman Jahan Wilcox told the New York Times that "Administrator Pruitt does not have a challenge coin".

Pruitt told Fox News last week he "didn't know" about the raises.

Kevin Durant's Contract Plans For Offseason Are Revealed
If Durant wants a long-term deal, he could look at a four-year, $158 million contract, speculates NBC's ProBasketballTalk . Durant and business partner Rich Kleiman will go over the scenarios in detail after the conclusion of the season.

According to the letters, Pruitt would also frequently exceed his allowable US government per diem rate, "sometimes even exceeding the 300 percent cap permitted in exceptional circumstances".

Senators approved Andrew Wheeler as the agency's deputy administrator despite complaints from Democrats that Wheeler helped lead a fight by the coal industry to block regulations that protect Americans' health and begin to address climate change.

The Senate voted 53-45 Thursday to limit debate on Wheeler's nomination, clearing a final vote as soon as Thursday afternoon. He flew with Delta instead of the government's contract carrier for that route so he could get frequent flier miles. Chmielewski has said he was removed from his position and placed on administrative leave after refusing to approve inappropriate expenditures. Wheeler and EPA air chief administrator Bill Wehrum would be "a really good one-two punch" on Clean Air Act issues.

And when Wheeler appeared before the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee last fall, he misrepresented the scientific consensus about human contribution to climate change. Sometimes, that impulse is partisan - most Democrats said nothing when the Obamas spent lavishly on personal travel while in office; most Republicans are similarly mute at the sight of the Trumps making Obama's travel spending look frugal. While Pruitt would have his expenses redeemed, the letter claims that there have been times when members of his security detail accompanying him did not have their expenses redeemed.

But President Trump has stood by Pruitt, claiming that he's doing a "great" job under "siege".

In February 2018 Bloomberg reported that Henry Barnet, an official with the EPA's Office of Criminal Enforcement, also confirmed the threats against Pruitt.

He paid $50 per night, according to the reports, and paid only for the nights he used the condo.
