Trump still mulling military options in Syria as tensions with Russian Federation rise

Trump still mulling military options in Syria as tensions with Russian Federation rise

But the group said that while it could possibly determine what types of chemicals were used in the attack, it would not be able to assign responsibility.

"We are trying to stop the murder of innocent people".

"Whiplash" is probably the best word to describe what Syria watchers are feeling.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned the Western states against any military action on his homeland. There's a banner headline - the United States is responding to chemical weapons, in addition to destroying the Islamic State - but the body of the story is missing. And he insisted it remains US policy not to be involved directly in Syria's civil war. Russian Federation needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together.

Despite such confidence, other US officials remained wary, warning that while Syria's use of chemical weapons could not be tolerated, much more was at stake, given the backing it gets from Moscow.

The No 10 statement issued following the Cabinet meeting said Mrs May had again described the attack on Douma as a "shocking and barbaric act" which represented a further erosion of global law.

The question now becomes what the United States, probably with France and Britain, will hit in war-torn Syria, and what are the risks of escalation and miscalculation with Assad allies Russian Federation and Iran.

Mattis voiced his concerns in testimony to a House committee Thursday.

"We hope that there will be no point of return - that the USA and their allies will refrain from military action against a sovereign state", Nebenzia told reporters late on Thursday. And these two countries, Israel and Saudi Arabia, are extremely anxious about the increasing influence of Iran, which is also part of this new geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape in the world.

"There remains a robust back and forth", said one Pentagon official about military-to-military contacts.

The incident would be the largest of its kind in Syria since April past year, when nerve agent sarin or a sarin-like substance was dropped onto the town of Khan Sheikhoun, killing at least 85 people.

Israeli Labour is part of the "Zionist Union" faction in Israel's Knesset that controls 24 of the legislature's 120 seats. Clearly this proves that the Jewish Labour Movement's work is more important than ever, and we're not going anywhere".

In Washington, U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress he believed there was a chemical attack in Syria, but added a short while later that the United States had not made any decision to launch military action.

Two days ago, US President Donald Trump warned that missiles "will be coming" in response to that attack.

But such measured actions are harder when they're preceded by presidential taunts.

"Cabinet agreed that the Assad regime has a track record of the use of chemical weapons and it is highly likely that the regime is responsible for Saturday's attack", the statement said. Everybody's going to pay a price. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' You shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!"

The hasty tweets fired off on Wednesday directly contradicted this tweet the president posted early Thursday morning: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

"We're looking very, very seriously, very closely at that whole situation, and we'll see what happens, folks", the president announced on Thursday morning.

"Can not allow it", Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, adding he expected to make a decision on a response in the next 24 to 48 hours.

As with any use of military force, planners need to think carefully about "the day after".

Dimitry Gorenburg, a senior research scientist at Harvard's Davis Center for Russian Federation and Eurasian studies, told Business Insider that Russian Federation had flown in aircraft that specialize in anti-submarine warfare to Syria. Would Russian President Vladimir Putin feel he must make his own show of toughness by matching Trump and moving up the escalatory ladder?

During his meeting with Trump and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford, Mattis pushed for more evidence of the Assad regime's culpability for the attack, to bolster the case for air strikes, The New York Times reported.
