Trump now backs marijuana 'states rights' bill, senator says

"Late Wednesday, I received a commitment from the President that the Department of Justice's rescission of the Cole memo will not impact Colorado's legal marijuana industry".

Gardner has been pushing to reverse a decision made by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January that removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases against people who were following pot laws in states such as Colorado that have legalized the drug.

Erik Altieri, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said Sessions' hiring did not reflect Trump's promise to protect state's rights.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said during Friday's press briefing that the president spoke with Gardner today and yesterday.

Gardner said Trump assured him he would support legislation "to fix this states' rights issue once and for all". Nine states have passed laws regulating marijuana use by adults.

Under Mr. Sessions's approach, USA attorneys in states where pot is legal were given approval to prosecute cases where they see fit.

"We should hope for the best, but not take anything for granted", Blumenauer, a founder of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, said in a statement.

"With the President now reiterating this commitment, it is time for Congress to do its part and swiftly move forward bipartisan legislation that explicitly provides states with the authority and autonomy to set their own marijuana policies absent the fear of federal incursion". "I'm a states person, it should be up to the states, absolutely", he told a television interviewer in Colorado that year.

However, at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2015, Trump said he supported medical marijuana but called recreational pot "bad".

"We may now be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel", said Mason Tvert, who spearheaded a 2012 ballot measure legalizing recreational marijuana in Colorado. "They've quite a few points occurring correct now in Colorado - some massive points", Trump talked about then.

When he selected Sessions, a former federal prosecutor and USA senator from Alabama, as his attorney general, marijuana supporters girded themselves for a crackdown. Nonetheless Gardner talked about Courses had promised him he'd do nothing to intervene with Colorado's sturdy marijuana market.

Since January, Gardner had been blocking Trump's Justice Department nominees.

Senator Gardner placed a hold on Department of Justice nominees until he confirmed that Colorado's rights would not be infringed.

Democratic U.S. Representative Earl Blumenauer of OR, another state with permissive marijuana laws, expressed skepticism, saying, "Trump changes his mind constantly".

The action came amid widespread speculation that Trump will remove Justice officials overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

Gardner said because of those commitments, he informed the Administration that he would be lifting remaining holds on DOJ nominees. Sessions and also Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the official supervising the Russian Federation probe that has been the aim of the ire of Trump has been met with by Gardner.
