Armenia marks massacre by Ottoman Turks 103 years ago

Turkey opposes that definition, and many countries, including the US, haven't labeled the massacre as a genocide.

While the number of Armenians who perished during the genocide remains under debate, Armenians say 1.5 million died, while Turkey suggests 300,000 perished.

The Chamber of Deputies (lower house of the Parliament) of the Czech Republic approved on April 25, 2017, a resolution, condemning the genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Turkey.

The President's full statement is provided at the end of this news item. Trump recalled that in the last years of the Ottoman Empire in its territory were killed 1.5 million Armenians. "It's a historic day for Armenia".

The ceremony in question took place on 24 April in Istanbul.

Wynne said Sunday that Ontario was one of the first regions in the world to recognize the genocide.

103 years have passed since the start of the Armenian Genocide, the first genocide of the 20th century. The practice of genocide has occurred throughout human history.

There are numerous documents considering the massacres of the Armenian people as a pre-planned and thoroughly implemented act of genocide.

The opposition is dominated by younger Armenians. In January Armenia withdrew from a deal to normalise relations, signed in 2009 but unratified by either country.

In a statement to mark Armenian Remembrance Day, Trump said the US recalled "the horrific events of 1915 and grieve for the lives lost and the many who suffered".

"We also want to remember all those who helped victims, all those who helped rebuild Armenian civilization and culture".

As we honor the memory of those who suffered, we also reflect on our commitment to ensure that such atrocities are not repeated.

"We reject the inaccurate expressions and the subjective interpretation of history in the written statement by Mr. Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, released on 24 April 2018 regarding the events of 1915", the statement said.
