Amazon announces major expansion in Boston

Amazon announces major expansion in Boston

Amazon will create 2,000 jobs in Boston in the fields of machine learning, speech science, cloud computing, and robotics engineering as it gets ready to expand its Tech Hub in the city, one of over a dozen such hubs nationwide.

Boston remains on a list of 20 finalists competing for Amazon's $5 billion second headquarters and the estimated 50,000 jobs that would bring.

"Amazon's decision to bring another 3,000 jobs to Vancouver is great news for our city's booming innovation economy", said Mayor Gregor Robertson. With state-of-the-art amenities and an easily accessible location for its employees, the new Development Centre will sit above a city landmark. A recent study by the real-estate website Zillow found Boston's selection could boost rental prices by 1.4 percent, which would take the current median rent from $2,371 up to $2,490. These new jobs will focus on Amazon web services, Audible and Alexa.

Armenia marks massacre by Ottoman Turks 103 years ago
Turkey opposes that definition, and many countries, including the US , haven't labeled the massacre as a genocide. In January Armenia withdrew from a deal to normalise relations, signed in 2009 but unratified by either country.

Just yesterday, the company announced plans to expand its Vancouver operation by 3,000 workers and 416,000 square feet of office space. Even without large subsidies, Amazon's second headquarters would drive up the already high cost of housing in Boston, overburden crowded roads and rail lines, and gobble up scarce labor, some critics worry.

In November, the company announced 1,000 new tech jobs at its Vancouver office. The new Amazon employees will be accommodated in a tower the company is building on the site of the city's old post office and they say that structure's architectural heritage will be preserved.

Amazon first opened offices in MA in 2011. In the meantime, Canada launched a fast-track visa program for highly skilled workers previous year, which indeed, may very well have something to do with Amazon's decision on Vancouver. But Amazon is hiring aggressively in cities all over the world. Over the past five years, the company has invested more than $100 billion in the US, including corporate offices, development and research centers, fulfillment infrastructure, and compensation to its employees.
