Fitbit, Google partner for smarter fitness bands

Fitbit, Google partner for smarter fitness bands

The partnership will improve the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, particularly through combination with Fitbit's recently expanded capabilities in the wake of its acquisition of Twine Health - a collaborative disease management platform. Fitbit will use the API to ensure that its data is safely transferred to Google's cloud.

How Will Fitbit Collect The Data?

By using the Google Healthcare API, Fitbit hopes to accelerate interoperability with existing and future healthcare partners and provide data exchange that can scale to meet large enterprise partner needs. Fitbit Health Solutions will then use the various healthcare and Internet of Things (IoT) APIs that Google offers to allow doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers to feed data into their patient records.

Pellegrini did, however, hint at the impact Google's AI and machine learning expertise could have on data collected through these devices and uploaded to a patient's EHR.

The Cloud Healthcare APIs are created to be easy to use and integrate, and Google officials say the system is fully compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (aka HIPPA).

Covered entities also need to do their due diligence before getting involved with relationships that could involve the use of patients' Fitbit-generated health data, Wu stresses.

Fitbit is serious about making it easier for doctors and medical professionals to access important health data.

The wearable fitness tracking device has always been associated with tracking fitness and physical activity.

Fitbit will also move to Google's (googl) cloud data storage platform, much of which is already certified as complying with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPPA, which regulates the use of medical records.

Healthcare providers are also able to run analytics from the clinical data gleaned from various aggregated medical and clinical systems.

"Together, we have the opportunity to deliver up-to-date information to providers, enhancing their ability to follow and manage the health of their patients and guide their treatment", he added. The steady flow of health data would also help doctors identify otherwise hard to diagnose diseases and react accordingly, the companies hope. We'll keep you updated when they release a new feature or product within this collaboration.
