May set to avoid London wipeout in local elections

May set to avoid London wipeout in local elections

Labour lost Nuneaton and Bedworth with the council falling to no overall control after the Conservatives gained seats.

"National issues have played a very big part", he said.

The Lib Dems have gained at least 20 seats across the country. The rest are being counted during the day on Friday with results expected during the afternoon.

And in more than 100 council areas, also mostly urban, a third of the seats are being contested.

The Conservatives held Hillingdon, west London while Labour kept control of Barking & Dagenham, Ealing and Waltham Forest.

Mayoral elections are taking place in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Watford and the Sheffield City region, but there were no polls in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The first results show the UKIP vote going to the Tories with them making gains while Labour have made losses outside of London.

Support for Ukip has collapsed with the party winning just two seats almost five hours into counting. Thirteen seats were up for election.

Judson grad Tre Flowers drafted to Seattle Seahawks
With the first-round selection, Penny becomes the Aztecs' first such pick since Kyle Turley was chosen eighth overall in 1998. The Seahawks do have a lot of running backs and any of them could eclipse Penny due to Seattle's "always compete" mentality.

The Conservatives lost three seats on this symbolic council at the heart of London's political district but retained overall control by a wide margin. But since the 2016 EU Referendum it has seen a decline in popularity and is only putting up candidates in 540 seats - compared with 2,193 in 2014.

Former council leader Marco Cereste (Conservative) increased his majority in Hampton Vale, but Jo Johnson (Labour) lost in Bretton having moved over from East.

In Norwich, the Greens will be looking to cut down Labour's majority.

And there was anger in areas trialling controversial ID cards, with some people saying they were unable to cast their ballot.

Other changes saw Christian Hogg (Liberal Democrat) win Fletton and Stanground from Labour and Shazia Bashir (Conservative) take North from Labour.

Swindon, Woking, Watford, Gosport and Bromley were running the trials.

MPs and councillors said people, including elderly residents, were being turned away because they did not have appropriate ID.

"This is a pilot, an evidence-based approach, and obviously we will consider the pilot and decide the best way to go forward".
