Gennady Golovkin makes history with second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosyan

Gennady Golovkin makes history with second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosyan

It took the 36-year-old Golovkin just two rounds to finish Martirosyan, who was fighting for the first time in almost two years.

The referee stopped the fight at one minute, 53 seconds and Martirosyan (36-4-1) added: "It was like being hit by a train".

"One punch can change everything, for me or for him". It was all of his punches. "It was the hardest I have ever been hit".

It means the undefeated "GGG" not only retains his World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation, and International Boxing Organization middleweight titles but also equaled Bernard Hopkins' record of 20 straight middleweight title defenses. Most ringside observers felt Golovkin should have won by close decision, but the fight was too close to vehemently complain that the fight was ruled a draw.

Gennady Golovkin dominated Vanes Martirosyan, winning with a second-round knockout (courtesy of Sporting News). Although he never admitted that he wanted the fight to end in a KO, it appears that as the first bell rung, thats all He wanted to do.

Golovkin, angry at Alvarez for what he believes was the intentional use of performance-enhancing drugs, came out with something to prove against Vanes Martirosyan, who was signed to replace Alvarez.

But the focus now shifts back to Alvarez, who is currently serving a six-month suspension handed by the Nevada Athletic Commission in April after failing a drug test.

Russian police arrest opposition leader Alexei Navalny
The unauthorised protest was part of nationwide demonstrations taking place under the slogan: "He is not our tsar". Police warned it would use force and "impact munition" to disperse the rally.

Golovkin was initially slated to fight former two-division world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on this night.

The fight was held in Carson (California), at stake was all the belt Kazakh boxer, except IBF.

However, Golovkin questions if the September fight will happen because Alvarez is not now in a drug testing program. "I have lots of belts".

Within 90 days Golovkin will have to conduct the defense of the IBF belt against mandatory Challenger Ukrainian Sergey Derevyanchenko. I don't care who. Golovkin wants to clean out the middleweight division.

"I'm a fighter, I fight", Martirosyan said. "I want everyone", he said when asked who is next. While it was easy to take the initial reports that the Kazakhstani champion would still fight on May 5th with a grain of salt, additional information seemed to make it clear that he was dead serious.

With or without Alvarez, GGG was determined to fight Saturday, and he took a massive pay cut - from a mid-eight-figure payday for the Alvarez sequel to $1 million - as promoter Tom Loeffler scrambled to make it happen. We have two or three other guys that we're looking at, right now.

"My trainer Edmond (Tarverdyan) always tells me "fight or no fight, stay in the gym and stay sharp". Before Saturday night, the 32-year-old Martirosyan hadn't boxed since losing a unanimous decision to former WBA/IBO 154-pound champion Erislandy Lara in their 12-round rematch in May 2016.
