Political stalemate. Tories and Labour deadlocked

Political stalemate. Tories and Labour deadlocked

The big winners of the night were the minority Liberal Democrats who appeared to be finally forgiven for their spell as coalition partners with the Conservatives in David Cameron's government.

As results from town hall across the country poured in Friday, it was clear Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives did not suffer any serious damage.

Votes in the local elections equated to a 35 per cent share for both Labour and the Conservatives.

The upbeat UKIP attitude was continued by its East of England MEP, Patrick O'Flynn, who said the party "does not need big poll numbers to exert Brexit leverage right now", needing only to "pose a limited asymmetric threat".

Andrew Gwynne, Labour's co-national campaign coordinator has described it as "an election of consolidation" with no particular gains or loses from the two major political parities.

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn poses by a sign after voting in local elections at a polling station at Pakeman Primary School on May 3, 2018 in London, England.

But May's party lost control of the highly prized council in the Trafford area of the northern city of Manchester - its only foothold in an important Labour-dominated economic region where the Conservatives have spent years trying to win support.

Mr Watson said the party was taking action to tackle the problem, but acknowledged that more needed to be done.

Tories held on to Hillingdon and Mr Corbyn's party fell well short of the upsets some had predicted in Tory strongholds Wandsworth, Westminster and Kensington.

Lib Dem leader Vince Cable, whose centrist party has struggled in recent years after losing support for going into government with the Conservatives, said: "We are very much on the way back".

Saudi Arabia BLASTS Iran leader for 'making Adolf HITLER look GOOD'
Bin Salman reportedly pressured Abbas to accept the U.S. framework for peace after Trump's recognition of Jerusalem . The Saudi Arabian public and media have previously been heavily critical of Israeli treatment of Palestinians.

Redditch MP Rachel Maclean praised her fellow Conservatives saying it was a really good result - and one that had been about local not national issues.

Guardian columnist Owen Jones, who helped organise numerous events, noted that while Labour did not gain overall control of the councils they campaigned for, many saw an increase in the number of councillors elected.

"We are delighted to have got Andrew Dabbs in Drayton and to get Aiden Ramsey in in Abbey North", said Councillor Ritchie.

"The Southwest has the unenviable title of being the low-paid capital of Britain", he said.

The Conservatives control 46 - down two. May's predicament has been complicated by the House of Lords, the unelected chamber of Parliament, which has inflicted 10 defeats on her Brexit legislation, adding amendments that she will try to overturn in the House of Commons, the main chamber.

The leader of the Labour group, Mohammed Iqbal, 47, said the situation was an "appalling state of affairs". "For me that means coming out of the customs union and the single market".

Matt Singh of Number Cruncher Politics noted: "Opposition parties are supposed to do well in mid-term contests, and these aren't the results of one that's about to storm the next general election".

Theresa May visited Wandsworth hailing as a success the fact that Labour had failed to capture a borough that has been under Conservative control for 40 years. "We have demonstrated that we can win when we are focused and we can only build on that". UKIP went on to help lead the successful Brexit "leave" campaign.

The party also gained control of Three Rivers, south-west Hertfordshire, which had been under no overall control and has won South Cambridgeshire from the Tories.
