Percentage of Registered Republicans in California Sinks to New Low, Report Shows

Trump, who helped the Republican National Committee raise a record $132 million a year ago, has told advisers he is eager to ramp up his campaign travel on behalf of Republicans.

Advisers said the president was pleased that Republicans nominated Attorney General Pat Morrissey, considered a stronger challenger against Manchin.

The number of registered Republicans in California is remarkably close to the amount of voters with no party preference, according to Secretary of State Alex Padilla's office.

In May 2016, about 37 percent of voters cast Democratic ballots and 63 percent cast Republican ballots.

But then, combine a relatively high win rate with women simply running in more districts, and it means more women on the ballot in November.

The most closely watched race Tuesday takes place in West Virginia, where Republican leaders got their wish as ex-convict Don Blankenship fell well short of winning the Senate primary.

Do primary results show one party has momentum going into the general?

Interestingly, despite their majorities in most congressional districts, a Democrat now holds only Louisville's Third District seat.

OH voters don't register with a party.

They're nipping closer at the heels of Republicans; that party now outpaces independents by just 30,000 voters. Just about all of that change has come from Republicans, who now give Mueller a 17% approval rating, down from 29% in March.

That makes it hard to compare party turnout election to election, said Paul Beck, a political science professor emeritus at Ohio State University. The total represents 75% of Californians who are eligible to vote, an increase from recent years. Cordray and DeWine will compete to replace GOP Gov. John Kasich, who is term limited. Still he says there are reasons why more Republicans voted. The president carried 10 states in 2016 that have Democratic senators on the ballot this year and is expected to campaign heavily to help Republicans maintain Senate and House majorities and elect GOP governors.

That said, neither of the two women competing for Senate nods in OH and West Virginia won their primaries. Dawson, who was DeWine's communications director when he was a senator, said primaries have an entirely different electorate in presidential years.

Braun brushed off attacks about voting in Democratic primaries until 2012, saying he did so to "weigh in" on local races in a blue area and did not vote for Democrats in state or national elections.

On more traditional issue priorities, voters are now more apt to say the nation's economy will be an important factor in their vote than they were in February (84% call it extremely or very important now, up from 79% in February), with immigration (from 72% important to 76% now) and taxes (from 67% important to 73% now) are also on the rise.
