Israel destroys Gaza tunnel, boosts troop numbers, ahead of expected protests

Israel destroys Gaza tunnel, boosts troop numbers, ahead of expected protests

With American officials looking on, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised President Donald Trump's "bold decision" to move the American Embassy to contested Jerusalem.

Yes, the folks at FC Beitar Jerusalem claim the tribute to the American president is down to him formally recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Jerusalem's largest soccer club announced Sunday that it has changed its name to "Beitar Trump Jerusalem", in honor of the U.S. president's recognition of Israel's capital and moving his country's embassy from Tel Aviv. The weekly protests along the Israel-Gaza border are expected to culminate on Monday in parallel to the celebrations in Jerusalem.

The Israeli military said Saturday it was shutting down its main cargo crossing into Gaza after Palestinian protesters caused extensive damage to it, and that it had also destroyed an attack tunnel militants dug near its main pedestrian crossing. The resolution also stated that European Union countries would not move their embassies to Jerusalem.

Security is tight in Jerusalem as USA guests arrive as the region braces for protests against the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.

Israel's army said it would nearly double the number of troops surrounding the Gaza Strip and in the occupied West Bank.

On Tuesday, Palestinians will mark Nakba, referring to the mass uprooting during the Mideast war over the 1948 creation of Israel. No Israelis have been injured.

This will include members of a delegation led by Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka, his senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and secretary of treasury Steven Mnuchin.

Meanwhile, Israel warned that its army will harshly respond and strike on Hamas infrastructure all over the Gaza Strip, in case of masses of demonstrators who try to cut the fence of the border and infiltrate into Israel, according to Israeli media.

Kimberly Guilfoyle: Everything to know about Trump Jr.'s rumored new girlfriend
She was previously linked to Anthony Scaramucci when he briefly separated from his wife, Deidre Ball, last year. Multiple sources have confirmed that the pair have been dating for "several weeks", according to Page Six .

More than 40 Palestinians have been killed in the latest violence.

Abbas, who for years had banked on the USA to persuade Israel to cede land for a Palestinian state, felt betrayed and halted contacts with the Trump administration.

A high-ranking delegation of Gaza's Hamas rulers headed Sunday to Egypt, amid diplomatic efforts aimed at containing Monday's mass rally.

The agenda will include talks over the controversial USA embassy move, scheduled to take place on Monday.

For Israelis, Sunday was Jerusalem Day, an annual celebration of the "reunification" of the city following the 1967 Six-Day War.

Furthermore the name change, despite President Trump's historic decision to move the US Embassy, comes under intense scrutiny.

The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

What makes Jerusalem so holy?
