Net Neutrality Just Became a Major Campaign Issue for 2018 and Beyond

Net Neutrality Just Became a Major Campaign Issue for 2018 and Beyond

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai on Thursday defended his decision to kill Obama-era net neutrality rules a day after the Senate voted to nullify the rules change.

Though the Senate vote to repeal will most likely be made moot by the house the Coalition of Internet Voters made a strong show of support as Sen. Only three Republican senators voted in favor of the resolution. The Federal Communications Commission voted to overturn the rule last December. With the FCC rules set to expire on June 11, 30 states have introduced net neutrality protection legislation, although regulation-averse Texas isn't one of them.

Before the vote, Senator Ed Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, urged fellow senators to disregard the "armies of lobbyists marching the halls of Congress on behalf of big internet service providers". Many have subsidiaries or affiliated companies that also produce vast amounts of programming, putting them in position to control internet access and download speeds in ways that enhance the value of their own products. At the time of writing, 161 representatives have signaled interest in voting for the House version of the CRA, 57 short of a majority.

Republicans insist they, too, believe in net neutrality, but want to safeguard it by crafting forward-looking legislation rather than reimposing an outdated regulatory structure. However, Republicans have voted en masse to have these regulations repealed, alongside Trump's vociferous dismissal of the Obama-era development. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen.

"This issue presents a stark contrast: Are you on the side of the large Internet and cable companies, or are you on the side of the average American family?" said Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

Battlefield V to be revealed next week
Predictably, there are no details on where exactly Battlefield V will be set, but previous rumours have pointed to World War II. That's all we know for the moment, so we're going to have to wait until next week for our first actual look at the game.

CTIA said that the FCC's repeal of net neutrality rules hasn't prevented Americans from accessing online content-but CTIA failed to note that the rules are still in effect.

But Pai said the FCC decision will be beneficial for consumers nationwide. "Net neutrality is essential for ensuring new companies can compete with established ones, so we encourage citizens to contact their representatives in the House to make their voices heard".

The new rules, which are now set to go into effect on June 10, would no longer prevent Internet service providers from prioritizing their own content, or that of their partners, through so-called "fast lanes".

However, the endeavor to cease abrogation of net neutrality rules as a segment of an expansive political strategy by Democrats to marshal young voters in the November elections. "Going forward, I will continue to work with my Senate colleagues on a real bipartisan legislative solution that prohibits blocking, throttling and paid prioritization of internet traffic while also encouraging innovation, promoting competition, helping spur rural broadband investment and deployment, and preserving and protecting the open internet".
