YouTube Premium Replacing Red; New YouTube Music Service To Launch Next Week

Google Play Music is expected to be gradually phased out as YouTube Music is introduced more globally. The ad-supported version will offer official songs, albums, playlists, artist-based radio and YouTube's library of videos. The second tier of the music service costs $9.99. The company has now officially announced its plans with the actual start of YouTube Music scheduled for next week.

There have been many rumors in the past few months about a new YouTube Music service coming soon, and Google made it official today.

Alphabet-owned YouTube will launch a new music streaming service on 22 May. Google now has an existing service called Google Play Music that will be fazed out and absorbed by YouTube Music and those members will gain access to the new service when that rolls out.

For existing YouTube Red members, the current price will continue for YouTube Premium, it said. According to Recode, YouTube Music will eventually replace Google Play Music, Google's very similar music streaming service.

Google Play Music subscribers will be given free YouTube Music membership as part of their subscription, the company confirmed.

The service is all about "putting music in one place".

YouTube Red was launched back in 2015 and it charges users $9.99 a month to stream content without ads, download videos for offline viewing and watch Red original shows.

Subscribers will also get a new mobile app and a new desktop player, both of which are optimized for music listening.

The platform will benefit from having users' existing YouTube history, meaning it can provide accurate recommendations from the start. That'll get you ad-free music, background listening, and downloads.

The other four countries in which it is taking on Spotify and Apple Music are the US, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea. For instance, Play Music lets you upload your personal MP3 collection and listen to it free.
