Korea hints at suspending military drills with US

US President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at a summit on the island of Sentosa in Singapore.

While Trump claimed a historic breakthrough at the most significant diplomatic event of his presidency, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, was more measured.

Adding that it is important to keep a healthy skepticism towards North Korea's intentions, the expert said perhaps there were too high expectations on President Trump's deal-making skills.

DPRK is the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the formal name of North Korea.

But Victor Cha, a former USA pointman on North Korea, gave Trump more credit, writing in The New York Times: "Despite its many flaws, the Singapore summit represents the start of a diplomatic process that takes us away from the brink of war".

North Korea's state media hailed the summit as a success, including highlighting Trump's surprise announcement after the meeting that the U.S. would stop military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long sought.

The move - long demanded by Pyongyang - has been seen as a major concession to North Korea and appeared to take U.S. allies in the region by surprise.

"It is a blank cheque for Pyongyang, a free pass to carry on as (North Korea leader Kim Jong Un) pleases, as his regime has for decades", he said.

He took a night-time stroll around some of the country's sights ahead of his summit with US President Donald Trump.

The US president says everyone can feel much safer now that he has signed a historic document with the North Korean leader to promote peace.

U Sung Tak, 79, said the future was looking "bright" because Kim was "leading the world's political trend on the Korean peninsula, steering the wheel of history".

"It empowers China and South Korea not only to stop enforcing sanctions but also to return to resuming the generous subvention schemes of the past, when almost US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) a year would flow from Seoul to Pyongyang's coffers, and considerably more from Beijing".

The Chinese position echoes comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who called for a lifting of sanctions during a May visit to Pyongyang, North Korea's capital. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government.

The report noted that Kim and Trump walked together after lunch, "deepening friendly feelings" and held a "meaningful photo session" to commemorate the signing of the agreement.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War and has used them in a variety of drills.

Seoul and Washington had long insisted that their joint military drills were strictly defensive.
