Empty seats at World Cup as 5000 fans skip Egypt-Uruguay

Empty seats at World Cup as 5000 fans skip Egypt-Uruguay

"We thought Salah would play".

Russian Federation leads Group A on goal difference after beating Saudi Arabia 5-0 on Thursday in the tournament's opening match.

"Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said: "[I'd rather have] Salah in my team.

"So we decided not to take that risk because we want to be sure we have him in top form in our match against Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia".

Egypt has yet to win a World Cup match while Uruguay won its opening World Cup game for the first time since 1970.

Salah's fitness for entering the game has been the target of much speculation since he suffered a shoulder injury in Liverpool's Champions League final loss to Real Madrid on May 26.

Egypt's coach, Hector Cuper has explained why he opted to keep Liverpool star Mohammed Salah on the bench in Egypt's opening game against Uruguay.

The recent slump in friendly matches could be a blessing in disguise if it eradicates any complacency going into the World Cup . Tite's team selection has been to form a team that could be viewed as complete as opposed to an attacking or a defensive unit.

But the sports minister of the region, Leonid Rapoport, said the half-empty stands were "not nice" and added: "Of course we don't want this to be repeated in the next games".

In contrast, Uruguay are at full-strength with Edinson Cavani partnering Suarez up front for Oscar Tabarez's side, tipped by some as outsiders to win the tournament. What a wonderful game we played!

The double-stacked cake with candles was taken to a hotel where the Egyptian team is staying for the World Cup.

"We managed to hold off one of the best teams in the World Cup and only a small error led to them winning in the last minute", said 27-year-old Karim Mohamed who watched the match with friends in the United Kingdom.

Aside from Liverpool ace Salah failing to get off the bench with his shoulder injury, another major talking point was also off the pitch - large portions of empty seats in one main stand at the Yekaterinburg Arena were an embarrassing sight for Federation Internationale de Football Association and local organisers.

Egypt next play Russian Federation in St Petersburg on Tuesday, giving Salah four more days to work on his fitness while Uruguay take on Saudi Arabia on Wednesday in Rostov.
