Ashleigh Barty into Nottingham final as rain disrupts Johanna Konta semi

Ashleigh Barty into Nottingham final as rain disrupts Johanna Konta semi

Konta defeated her vanquisher in last year's Nottingham final - Donna Vekic - in yesterday's semifinal and was aiming to be the first British woman to win a WTA singles title at home since Sue Barker in 1981.

British No. 1 Johanna Konta found herself edged out again in the Nottingham final for the second straight year as Ashleigh Barty claimed the title.

The 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory marked the second WTA title for Barty after her win in Kuala Lumpur a year ago, and lifts her to No.16 in the world rankings leading into next month's Wimbledon tournament.

She was then able to hold her serve to take the set 6-2 in impressive time, just under half an hour.

Konta had been seeking her first title since Miami in April 2017 but only managed 52% of her first serves in the opening set with Barty the more solid. "I'm very happy to just battle through and try to really just keep my mind at the task in hand".

Elsewhere, second-seed Australian teenager Alex de Minaur eased past Belarusian fourth seed Ilya Ivashka, 6-2, 6-4, in the ATP Challenger event to set up a Sunday showdown with Briton Evans. "It's been building and building and getting better and better each match".

Later on, he asked if she was okay, and she replied, "Yeah, are you? " showing that royals are regular, just like the rest of us. The duchess , a former actress on the TV show " Suits ", is easing into royal duties after marrying Prince Harry last month.

Looking ahead to Sunday's final, Konta said: "I know she is a very crafty and talented player, especially on this surface". She responded to the umpire by saying: "I am a human being, no a robot".

Vekic called for the trainer and looked ready to go for treatment when rain forced them all off.

But she is wary of her Aussie opponent's strengths on grass.

"Every week on clay is a week closer to grass", Ashleigh Barty said during the French Open.

Barty, who is into her second final of the year after losing in January to former world No.1 Angelique Kerber in Sydney, added: "I lost to Jo here (Nottingham) last year, so I think I can go in and play some pretty free tennis".

"That's a great challenge for me, to play someone who's so in form".
