Nations defend U.N. rights council after US pullout

Haley said Wednesday that the organizations had previously written a joint letter to members of the Human Rights Council urging them to oppose a US-sponsored resolution to reform it.

Washington's withdrawal is the latest United States rejection of multilateral engagement after it pulled out of the Paris climate agreement and the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

President Trump has recently faced widespread, vociferous condemnation for his "zero tolerance" immigration policy that is separating children from their families at the US-Mexico border.

Among the US's failed initiatives was an attempt to prevent human rights abusers from gaining council membership, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haley said.

"These reforms were needed in order to make the council a serious advocate for human rights", Haley said. She did not mention Saudi Arabia, which rights groups pushed to be suspended in 2016 over killings of civilians in the Yemen war.

She says they tried to "block negotiations" and "thwart reform".

UNHRC president Vojislav Suc told the UNHRC in Geneva that the UN General Assembly would now hold an election in the western group for a replacement member.

China, which has on multiple occasions voiced support for multilateral institutions abandoned by U.S. President Donald Trump, portrayed the council as "a major body.to promote the realisation of human rights".

Ashleigh Barty into Nottingham final as rain disrupts Johanna Konta semi
Looking ahead to Sunday's final, Konta said: "I know she is a very crafty and talented player, especially on this surface". She was then able to hold her serve to take the set 6-2 in impressive time, just under half an hour.

But in Jerusalem Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the move.

The Geneva-based body was established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide, but its pronouncements and reports have often infuriated the U.S. - in particular, the council's relentless focus on Israeli policies toward the Palestinians.

Added Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch: "All Trump seems to care about is defending Israel". Washington also relocated its embassy to Jerusalem after recognising it as the capital of Israel, reversing decades of United States policy. Critics say this sends a message that the administration turns a blind eye to human rights abuses in some parts of the world. But Haley cited longstanding USA complaints that the 47-member council is biased against Israel.

Mr. Bolton said the decision to withdraw also addresses USA sovereignty.

Haley has been the driving force behind withdrawing from the human rights body, unprecedented in the 12-year history of the council.

Twelve rights and aid groups, including Human Rights First, Save the Children and CARE, warned Pompeo the United States withdrawal would "make it more hard to advance human rights priorities and aid victims of abuse around the world".

"China will continue to work with other parties and make contributions to the sound development of worldwide human rights through constructive dialogue and collaboration", he said. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said it was regrettable and that the council was the "best tool the global community has to address impunity".
