Democrats hoping to flip House not just trash-talking Trump

Democrats hoping to flip House not just trash-talking Trump

President Donald Trump defended his tough stance on immigrants crossing the USA border with Mexico on Saturday, praising his administration for a job well done and saying his approach will make the United States stronger.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November", Trump tweeted.

The US House of Representatives on Thursday defeated a Republican bill created to significantly reduce visas for legal immigration and to temporarily protect illegal "Dreamer" youths from deportation, but not offer them a path to permanent legal residency.

President Trump has, through White House officials, expressed his support for both pieces of legislation.

"They say the president is still 100 percent behind us". Moderate Republicans don't like the citizenship verification requirement and some conservatives don't like helping immigrants stay in the U.S. Last year, not long after House Republicans stood in the Rose Garden with Trump celebrating passage of their replacement for former President Barack Obama's health care law, he mocked their legislation as a "mean" bill.

Addressing the Senate race in Nevada, where Democratic U.S. Representative Jacky Rosen is challenging Heller, Trump took aim in his convention speech at a favorite Democratic target, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, who was campaigning with Rosen elsewhere in the state. Both bills were largely seen as partisan measures with dim chances of passage and nearly no path forward to becoming law, the latest failure in Congress to reach consensus on the divisive issue.

Key Republican lawmakers who have been involved in the negotiations said Friday that talks would continue through the weekend.

The compromise bill, which had been set for a vote later in the day, was crafted to appeal to more Republicans, some of whom joined with Democrats to defeat the more conservative immigration measure.

Stunning England break ODI record to crush Australia
World champions Australia could only manage 239 for nine in reply as they suffered their 14th defeat in 16 completed ODIs. Australia , however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.

This spring, the Trump administration put in a place a zero-tolerance policy on illegal border crossings, resulting in children separated from families at the border.

Neither of those have been good looks for Republicans from swing districts with large numbers of moderate voters - the very incumbents who must be re-elected for the GOP to retain House control.

House Democrats oppose the compromise bill because of its cuts to legal immigration and border wall funding.

Trump had told the House GOP in a meeting this week that he would sign any bill they voted on, although now he's saying they shouldn't bother to pass any bills until after the midterm elections.

Even Speaker Paul D. Ryan told reporters Thursday he didn't know if House Republicans could pass any immigration bill in response to a question that was about more than just the two bills the House was preparing to vote on.

Republicans had planned to take two immigration votes on Thursday, even though both were unlikely to pass and even less likely to be considered in the Senate.

But a spokeswoman for the US Department of Justice said the report was inaccurate. However, the bill did receive 193 votes despite little whip support from House Republican leadership. "There are many rooms full of women going through the same thing".

The immigration bill sponsored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) failed to pass through the House on Thursday.
