Hamilton wins French GP to retake lead in F1 title race

Hamilton wins French GP to retake lead in F1 title race

Valtteri Bottas topped the times to maintain Mercedes supremacy when the third and final practice for the French Grand Prix was severely curtailed by a heavy rainstorm on Saturday. Obviously you don't hit the brakes 200 metres before the corner just because you think it could be a bad spot to be in, you still try to be competitive.

Vettel returned to the pits for a new front wing while Bottas limped back on three wheels and a rim with the remains of the tyre flailing.

Moments later there was more trouble when Pierre Gasly ran his Toro Rosso into the back of Esteban Ocon's Force India, knocking them both out of the race and bringing out the safety vehicle.

Hamilton, who started from pole position, dominated the race after his two principal rivals for victory were eliminated from the battle at Turn 1. Vettel and Bottas were at the back following their repairs.

"But my race was lost at Turn 1".

Fernando Alonso said his 16th-place grid position at the French Grand Prix reflects the true performance of the McLaren this weekend and took solace from the fact he beat teammate Stoffel Vandoorne by 0.186s on Sturday. I'm really happy for them and l hope they can continue to perform like that.

He was unhurt and after climbing from his vehicle walked back to the pits with his helmet firmly in place, before the session resumed and Hamilton scorched to pole on his final flying lap. He was in the points on lap 10, and passed Sainz for fifth 10 laps later.

Chicharito Scores as Mexico Beat South Korea in 2018 World Cup
This win followed one of the World Cup's most confounding upsets, when Mexico toppled Germany 1-0 in its opener. The goal proved to be crucial for Mexico , which allowed a late goal to Tottenham star Son Heung-min.

Vettel charged on the restart on lap six and moved swiftly through the pack, making it to 12th by the end of lap seven.

Ricciardo was quick to point to Hamilton's new engine as a factor even before its introduction was confirmed by Mercedes. He stopped for new tyres on lap 33, momentarily losing the lead, before regaining it when Raikkonen stopped a lap later.

The German's comeback was impressive but fifth would have been as much as he might have expected, while Verstappen put in another very solid performance to take his second podium in a row and his third in four races. That is where he would remain. "I think we had no problems with the tyres, so I think we have made progress, and hopefully we can keep learning and make progress". I don't know how England would be able to take it though if we did win the World Cup. "I pushed hard and probably pushed too much and was playing catch up".

He is out of contract at the end of the year, and on the evidence of McLaren's miserable form, only money will stop him from quitting.

Ferrari responded by going out on ultra-softs -- Mercedes were on super-softs -- and Vettel jumped to second, Raikkonen to third as the rain relented and the track became faster in the final dramatic minutes of Q2.

While Hamilton thanked his team for its "great work" via the radio after crossing the line, Vettel lamented that he "had lost the race on the first lap".

"It's a attractive Sunday, everyone".
