Supreme Court rules for Texas redistricting plans

Supreme Court rules for Texas redistricting plans

"The justices agree that her case, and the judgment against her, should be reconsidered", said the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has represented Phillips and Stutzman. "The Washington attorney general's efforts to punish her because he dislikes her beliefs about marriage are as impermissible as Colorado's attempt to punish Jack Phillips and Masterpiece Cakeshop".

"The government has no authority to force Americans like Barronelle to engage in speech and events with which they morally disagree". Wisconsin courts ruled that Dassey's confession was not coerced, but on habeas review, a federal district court judge found the confession was "clearly involuntary". The two sued Stutzman after she declined, because of her faith, to design custom floral arrangements celebrating the same-sex wedding of a customer she had served for almost 10 years.

In two rulings about gerrymandering on Monday, the US Supreme Court handed a victory to Republicans in Texas by reviving electoral districts that had been thrown out by a lower court for discriminating against black and Hispanic voters, while returning a North Carolina suit to a lower court to determine whether the plaintiffs had standing to sue.

That case was about a florist in Washington state who was found to have violated the state's anti-discrimination law when she refused to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding.

"We view this decision as encouraging news that justice will prevail and the Washington State Supreme Court will again uphold the state's non-discrimination laws ensuring LGBTQ people can not be turned away from a business open to the public".

The 5-4 decision comes nine months after Democrats had celebrated lower court rulings that invalidated parts of Texas's electoral maps and a revised voter ID law.

The Supreme Court on Monday sent back to a lower court a decision that Republicans in North Carolina had gerrymandered the state's congressional districts to give their party an unfair advantage.

Texas Republicans praised and Democrats rejected the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling that the Texas Legislature did not purposely discriminate against minority voters when developing political boundaries.

The North Carolina case has some similarities to the Wisconsin case and a Maryland partisan gerrymander case that also was sent back to a lower court last week for further proceedings. "Unfortunately, the Supreme Court fell short", said Kristen Clarke, executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

Associated Press writer Mark Sherman contributed from Washington.

"The state of Washington has targeted me for over five years", Stutzman said.

Washington state's Supreme Court previous year rejected Stutzman's argument that forcing her to create floral arrangements for a same-sex wedding would violate her free speech rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and would be tantamount to endorsing same-sex marriage.
