Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Millennial beats veteran Democrat

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Millennial beats veteran Democrat

It will be interesting to see if Ocasio-Cortez becomes a legitimate crusader against the party establishment or if she will be co-opted and become little more than something of a priestess who grants absolution to establishment Democratic Party leaders and candidates who take corporate money, live in the swamp and have not adopted the new leftist progressive agenda.

In a viral campaign video, Ocasio-Cortez showed off the upbringing that shaped her self-described "democratic-socialist" views: She believes in Medicare for all, an end mass incarceration and the war on drugs and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway on Wednesday told "Fox and Friends" that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who just won a stunning victory in New York's Democratic congressional primary election, is the "new face" of the Democratic Party.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Mr Crowley had been an unwavering champion for America's working families for nearly two decades.

The 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez's win against the heavily funded 56-year-old chairman of the House Democratic Caucus - who was widely rumored to be a front-runner in succeeding House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) - is the latest dramatic shift in the party's leftward trajectory.

On her wish list are lots of things unlikely to pass a Congress held by either Republicans or centrist Democrats.

Crowley, who relishes identifying himself as "a guy from Queens" outspent Ocasio-Cortez, a Bronx native, 18-1.

"I think what we really need to talk about it is we need to reach out to young people, people we think are usually nonvoters, communities of color, people who speak English as a second language, working-class people, people with two jobs that usually are too busy, quote-unquote, to vote", Ocasio-Cortez said.

Affirming that she would support the impeachment of President Donald Trump, Ocasio-Cortez cited, "serious violations of the emoluments clause, among other very large concerns". "The Trump administration is a threat to everything we stand for here in Queens and the Bronx, and if we don't win back the House this November, we will lose the nation we love", Mr Crowley said.

Stunning England break ODI record to crush Australia
World champions Australia could only manage 239 for nine in reply as they suffered their 14th defeat in 16 completed ODIs. Australia , however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.

He puts emphasis on her previously working as a bartender. "Personally, in the previous year I've twice been in rooms where I knew everyone was a citizen - a passport office in Lower Manhattan and at jury duty in the Bronx - and most people appeared to be new Americans".

It might seem unbelievable that after Bernie Sanders' huge success in the 2016 democratic primaries running on a grassroots campaign that condemned Wall Street's influence and called for social justice that Democrats can still be caught off guard by progressives unseating their heavyweights. "There's a radical empathy that she has with people".

But he's not surprised a socialist platform appeals to voters in New York's 14th District.

"Our Caucus has been strengthened by his chairmanship, and by Chairman Crowley's relentless determination to defend the inclusive America symbolised by the Statue of Liberty", she added.

Ocasio-Cortez's campaign, meanwhile, was anything but cautious.

When a reporter asked Pelosi if "Democratic House leadership" should "look that way" toward an increasingly "younger, more female, more diverse, more progressive" Democratic Party, Pelosi replied, "Well, I'm female, I'm progressive".

Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor of the progressive magazine The Nation, last month called recent left-wing electoral successes part of a "Democratic Spring".

I wonder whether the Left in the United States needs to work on its relationship with trade unions.
