LeBron James faces Friday deadline on whether to test free agency

LeBron James faces Friday deadline on whether to test free agency

LeBron James has informed the Cleveland Cavaliers he will not exercise his $35.6 million option and will become a free agent.

Teams in the National Basketball Association can negotiate with free agents at midnight Sunday and the moratorium before they can sign new contracts ends July 6.

The most feasible path for James to go to Houston was by picking up his action and demanding a trade to the Rockets.

There was never a chance James would pick up the player option simply to remain in Cleveland for one more season. Even that was a remote possibility.

Both teams have been reportedly pushing to get another superstar in order to further entice James.

Ashleigh Barty into Nottingham final as rain disrupts Johanna Konta semi
Looking ahead to Sunday's final, Konta said: "I know she is a very crafty and talented player, especially on this surface". She was then able to hold her serve to take the set 6-2 in impressive time, just under half an hour.

James' decision to decline his option still lets fans in Cleveland, Los Angeles and Philadelphia dream.

JJ Redick's insane one-year deal aside, this a franchise whose last marquee free-agent signing was Elton Brand coming off a torn Achilles tendon.

As LeBron James deflected most questions about his playing future following an NBA Finals sweep at the champagne-soaked hands of the juggernaut Golden State Warriors, the four-time MVP did provide a small window into his free agency priorities. The fervor surrounding James' potential free agency has been strong for much of the past year, especially in a media capital like Los Angeles. This isn't insignificant. If James looks around the league and doesn't see a situation he loves, he can [looks up teen slang] secure the bag by signing a long-term deal in Cleveland.

Without the previous context that brought them here - the tanking, the heartless but ultimately correct trades, the patience in stockpiling prospects, the preservation of salary cap space - none of this is possible. "It ended a drought for Cleveland of 50-plus years, so I think we'll all remember that in sports history".

There has been talk James is intrigued by the thought of going out west to play for the Lakers, if he can get another All-Star like Paul George or Kawhi Leonard to join him. "I didn't realize that four years ago".
