Maryland newspaper shooter identified as Jarrod Ramos, police say

Maryland newspaper shooter identified as Jarrod Ramos, police say

At a news conference Friday, Police Chief Timothy Altomare said the Capital Gazette didn't press charges over social media threats the shooting suspect had made against the newspaper in 2013.

Ramos filed a failed lawsuit against the paper in 2012, alleging the newspaper, a columnist and an editor defamed him in the article about his conviction in a criminal harassment case in 2011. Prosecutors say 38-year-old Jarrod W. Ramos opened fire Thursday in the Capital Gazette newsroom. Also slain were Gerald Fischman, editorial page editor; features reporter Wendi Winters; reporter John McNamara, and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.

"When I saw that there was a shooting at the paper, I told my wife it was Jarred Ramos, there was no doubt in my mind it was Jarrod Ramos", McCarthy said. The story, which was written by staff writer Eric Thomas Hartley, detailed the case where Ramos repeatedly contacted a former high school classmate via Facebook, according to court documents.

Ramos, who is in his 30s, did not have any identification with him when he was arrested, according to a law enforcement source.

Ramos' legal action against the newspaper was unsuccessful, Marquardt said, and the suspect exhausted all of his appeals by 2014.

"Before going any further, I'd like to address the horrific shooting that took place yesterday at Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland", Mr. Trump said Friday, in his first live remarks about the incident. One of those tweets targeted one of the journalists killed Thursday, Rob Hiaasen.

Phil Davis, a Capital Gazette crime reporter, recounted how he was hiding under his desk along with other newspaper employees when the shooter stopped firing, the Capital Gazette reported on its website.

Ricardo Quaresma's superb strike gave them the lead against Iran in their third group game, before Ronaldo missed a penalty. Uruguay are yet to concede at the World Cup , but Portugal have kept only one clean sheet.

He says he wants people to remember what happened.

US President Donald Trump, yesterday said: "This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief".

Jayne Miller, a reporter with Baltimore's WBAL-TV, said Thursday that she spoke to a woman who claimed Ramos had stalked, harassed and sued her - becoming "fixated" to the point where she became frightened enough to move out of state. A judge dismissed the suit.

Keith Cyphers, who works in an office across the hall from the Capital Gazette, told "Good Morning America" he heard an "incredibly loud noise..."

Ramos was "uncooperative" with his interrogators, police said, and in court papers, authorities described him as "recalcitrant". The paper, like any publication, had amassed some disgruntled readers, he said, but "a lot of the times it was just people calling us 'The Crapital, ' getting upset at how we portrayed anything".

The court agreed the article was accurate and based on public records, the document showed. In a later interview appearing on the paper's online site, Davis likened the newspaper office to a "war zone".
