Trump administration requests more time to reunite immigrant families

Trump administration requests more time to reunite immigrant families

Last month, Sabraw ordered the government to reunite all children under 5 with their parents by July 10, and all other minor children by July 26.

"There's always going to be tension between a fast release and a safe release", said Sarah Fabian, a Justice Department attorney. Of the parents the government has identified so far, 46 remain in immigration detention centers. She said she is seeking clarification on how the government should handle these reunification cases given those requirements.

The ORR program "was not created to track the circumstances" behind a child's arrival in the U.S., Azar said, and the Department of Homeland Security didn't tell the refugee agency which children were taken from parents and which came over the border unaccompanied.

Numerous numbers are still in flux.

In about a dozen cases, the government was still trying to match a parent to a child.

Sabraw, the judge, noted that the act was intended for a different situation, but also said the government raised an important point.

Trump reversed course on June 20 amid an global outcry and said families should remain together. "But no one can make any informed decision, including the court, without additional information".

Meantime, children older than five are expected to be reunited with their parents by July 26th. The odds are particularly steep in cases where those parents have already been deported, as the government argued Thursday.

North Korea Mulls Ways To 'Conceal' Nuclear Weapons From U.S
The lone weapons facility that has been acknowledged by North Korea is in Yongbyon, 100 kilometres north of Pyongyang. But, he added, Kim had been "very emphatic several times in Singapore he was different from prior regimes".

The motion will be discussed with U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw and attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union - which requested the injunction as part of a class-action lawsuit - during a telephonic status conference at noon today.

All parties are expected to be back in court on Monday at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT) in San Diego, where next steps will be discussed, the ACLU said.

According to an administration official, the DOJ now believes the government is on track to reunify nearly all of the those currently eligible by tomorrow, CBS News' Paula Reid reports.

Sabraw also blocked the administration from deporting adults without their children unless the parent "affirmatively, knowingly, and voluntarily declines to be reunited with the child" prior to being expelled from the country. He and his two older siblings are now in NY, according to court filings.

Azar said Thursday that federal employees are now manually reviewing documents for each of the 11,800 individual immigrant children in HHS custody to see if anything in their files indicate they arrived at the border with their parents.

It's been more than a week since they released a tally of how many kids from separated families remain in government custody.

Azar said fewer than 3,000 total were separated, and fewer than 100 under the age of five. Some of the children were brought to the United States by someone who is not their biological parent, for example, while others have parents with serious criminal records.

The Justice Department also asked if the court will permit reunifications outside of the ordered timelines "in cases where parentage can not be confirmed quickly".
