Trump Blasts EU's Fine on Google

Trump Blasts EU's Fine on Google

Google chief Sundar Pichai immediately said the firm would appeal.

"Google has used Android as a vehicle to cement the dominance of its search engine", Vestager said in a statement.

The bundle contains 11 apps, including YouTube, Maps and Gmail, but regulators focused on three that had the biggest market share: Google Search, Chrome and the company's app store, called Play Store.

The fine was issued over what the European Union describes as "illegal practices" over how the internet giant implements its search and web browser apps on the devices of Android smartphone makers.

The EU gave Google 90 days to come up with remedies that could allow rival search apps and browsers onto more phones.

A Google spokesperson told Digital Trends that what's resulted has been "a vibrant ecosystem, rapid innovation, and lower prices" that don't add up to an antitrust scenario - rather, they're "classic hallmarks of robust competition".

Mr Pichai said: "The free distribution of the Android platform, and of Google's suite of applications, is not only efficient for phone makers and operators-it's of huge benefit for developers and consumers".

Prime time: A day of deals at Amazon, and at its rivals

Google was previously penalized by the European Commission just previous year, when the search giant was slapped with a $2.7 billion fine for lowering the ranking of competitor shopping comparison tools to promote its own.

European Union officials on Wednesday also ordered Google to stop using its popular Android mobile operating system to block its rivals, adding to trade tensions between Washington and Brussels.

Having its apps pre-installed is a huge revenue driver for Google.

His administration in early March announced tariffs of 25 percent on aluminum and 10 percent on steel imports that also include the European Union.

After all, if Google can't rely on the revenue stream from Android, that could mean that device manufacturers might, down the line, be faced with paying for Android service - costs that could make for more expensive phones for users.

As well as the Android and Google Shopping files, it also has a third investigation under way, into Google's AdSense advert-placing business.
