USA to impose sanctions on Turkey over detained pastor

Trump tweeted Thusday that the "United States will impose large sanctions on Turkey" for keeping Brunson in custody.

"He is suffering greatly", the president wrote.

Earlier, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence in a tweet threatened to impose "significant sanctions on Turkey until this innocent man of faith is free".

Perkins, who is also the president of the Family Research Council, said he does not think it a mere coincidence that Turkey made the announcement while the first-ever U.S. -led ministerial on advancing global religious liberty was taking place at the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence threatened Thursday to impose "large sanctions" on its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey if that country does not release an American pastor now under house arrest.

Turkey and the United States engage in a war of words over Ankara's detention of an American pastor on terrorism charges. The pastor, who has denied the charges, faces up to 35 years in jail if found guilty.

Trump and Pence have had multiple conversations with officials in the Turkish government regarding the detained American pastor in recent weeks, an administration official tells CNN.

Turkey has also been publicly critical of criminal prosecutions in the USA of state-run Halkbank official Mehmet Hakan Atilla and Reza Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader. Ankara accuses Gulen of masterminding the failed coup, and has long sought his extradition to Turkey.

"I find it hard to see how this relationship moves forward. if the Turkish government continues to detain Pastor Brunson as well as locally employed staff, journalists, and civil servants", Democratic Senator Robert Menendez said at the time.

'I believe in and support Turkey's territorial integrity, ' he told the court.

Kremlin expects Putin-Trump talks to pave way for mending ties
Asked at the end of the press conference whether he would tell Putin to stay out of USA elections, Trump responded simply: 'Yes'. They are also accused of stealing the data of half a million voters from a state election board website, the BBC report said.

Trump also directly called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to "do something to free this wonderful Christian husband & father".

Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and James Lankford of Texas released a joint press release as well.

Brunson's lawyer Cem Halavurt confirmed Turkish state media reports that his client was being put under house arrest, telling AFP he would be moved from prison later Wednesday.

Trump has spoken about Brunson already this year, bringing up his case in May during a ceremony to mark the release of an American held by Venezuela's government.

While the Kurds have proven themselves to be invaluable allies to the United States in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the USA considers the PKK, a Kurdish independence movement inside Turkey, as a terrorist organization for its violent tactics. Gülen denies any involvement in the coup.

A court in western Izmir province said Brunson would be electronically monitored and barred from leaving his house.

Pompeo, hosting the three-day confab, was surprised to hear the tough talk, sources said.

Erdogan has in the past linked Brunson's fate with that of the US -based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.

On July 18, the court rejected his defense lawyers' pleas to let him go and remanded Brunson in custody pending a fourth hearing on October 12.
