California's Carr Fire 30 Percent Contained As New Blazes Erupt Elsewhere

California's Carr Fire 30 Percent Contained As New Blazes Erupt Elsewhere

Firefighters reported progress Tuesday in their battle against the wildfires that have ravaged some of Northern California's most scenic areas, including twin blazes that were tearing through vineyards and brush-covered hills and threatening some 10,000 homes.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said another 440 buildings, including barns and warehouses, have also been destroyed by the fire, which is now the sixth most destructive in California history.

Blistering heat, shifting winds, steep terrain and plentiful dried growth continued to challenge more than 4,000 firefighters battling the Carr Fire, which has killed six people, including two firefighters. The Ferguson Fire, which has claimed the lives of two firefighters, had burned more than 90 square miles and was 33 percent contained. In all, some 19,000 people have been warned to flee, fire officials said.

Calm winds were expected on Wednesday in the Carr Fire area, about 150 miles (240 km) north of Sacramento, the National Weather Service said.

And California has already spent a quarter of its firefighting budget for the year in the month of July.

"Several of our staff have lost their homes and dozens more have been forced to evacuate", said Will Martin, spokesman for VA NorCal's Health Care System.

Two people have been killed in the fire, but no homes have been damaged or destroyed, fire officials said.

Facebook uncovers 'sophisticated' efforts to disrupt United States elections
Special counsel Robert Mueller later indicted the IRA for its "strategic goal to sow discord in the USA political system". It said that there were more than 9,500 Facebook posts created by the accounts and one piece of content on Instagram .

Large areas of Lake County remain evacuated, as do sections of Mendo near Potter Valley, and between Potter and the Lake County line. He bought his three-bedroom house past year using a loan from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Unlike the Carr Fire, authorities don't know what started Ferguson, which has now engulfed more than 58,000 acres.

Bush had returned to his mobile home in the community of Keswick last Tuesday after undergoing quadruple heart bypass surgery, but he was unable to drive and would have needed help to evacuate when the fire came through the neighborhood on Thursday, his sister, Kathi Gaston, told the Record Searchlight newspaper of Redding.

So far 20,911 acres have burned in the River Fire with 5 percent containment and 35,076 have burned in the Ranch Fire.

"You see out there what the firefighters have done to get themselves in front of your homes", Myers said.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency Saturday evening for the fires. "So we have a long way to go in this fire season".

The east-west route in the park - Big Oak Flat Road, or California 120 West, to Crane Flat and Tioga Road, or California 120 East - remains open.
