Murray hits out at Citi Open scheduling after 3am finish

Murray hits out at Citi Open scheduling after 3am finish

Alex de Minaur has sealed a career first at the Citi Open after an unfortunate setback for former World No.1 Andy Murray.

He has also withdrawn from next week's Rogers Cup in order to recover, Xinhua news agency reported.

Now ranked 832nd, Murray ended an 11-month absence from the tour in June, playing just three matches before arriving at the Citi Open.

If his body can take it, Murray plays for a semifinal spot in Friday's last match against 72ndranked De Minaur, who pulled two upsets on Thursday after rain, dumping USA 11th seed Steve Johnson 6-4 7-5 and South Korean eighth seed Chung Hyeon 6-2 4-6 6-2.

"I also need to be careful and to listen to my body as I come back from a long-term injury".

Murray said: "Sadly, I won't be able to take my place in the draw in Toronto".

The pair shared breaks in the third set, and as the clock ticked on later into the night, Murray eventually emerged victorious (7-4) in the final tie break - at 3:01 a.m.

Manchester United tour turns into a farce ahead of Real Madrid test
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is without 17 players as his preseason problems continue to grow. Tottenham manager Pochettino is now the favourite to replace Mourinho if the Portuguese boss leaves.

The 31-year-old Scotsman won his third three-set victory in four days, having been on the court for eight hours 11 minutes in all, and he started at midnight thanks to a fourth day of rain delays.

Meanwhile, defending champion Alexander Zverev made his way to the semi-finals by coming back for a 3-6 6-1 6-4 victory over No. 7 seed Kei Nishikori in a rain-interrupted match on Friday.

But despite that three-hour battle, the 31-year-old was expected to face Australian De Minaur again today (1.20am United Kingdom time) for a place in the final four. "There are lots of positives to take from this week, so I'll take some time to rest and recover and then to Cincinnati early to prepare and get ready".

Asked after beating Copil how his body is holding up, Murray replied: "It doesn't feel great, just now". "It's not good. And it's basically like playing two matches in a day".

I don't think I should be put in a position like that.

Tournament director Keely O'Brien had told the Washington Post she wanted Murray to play, citing his role model status.

"I hope we see him on court tonight fighting like he did last night, because that, I believe, is the right message for anyone in this sport", she said. "And I'm disappointed with that, because I know that the weather's tricky and I know it is for the scheduling, but it's a very hard position to be in".
