Saudi Arabia appears to threaten Canada in Tweet

Saudi Arabia appears to threaten Canada in Tweet

The diplomatic gulf between the federal government and Saudi Arabia widened to encompass travel on Tuesday as the country's state airline announced it was suspending operations in Canada.

The airline now operates at least two routes flying out of Toronto's Pearson International Airport - one to the Saudi capital city of Riyadh, the other to the city of Jeddah.

Ottawa did not publicly back down over the shock expulsion of Dennis Horak, with Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland saying Canada would continue to defend human rights around the world.

Canada's economic relationship with Saudi Arabia is not particularly significant to Riyadh, unlike the United States or other Western partner governments, which experts say makes Ottawa an easier target.

'We consider the Canadian ambassador to the kingdom persona non grata and order him to leave within the next 24 hours'.

The report also said all Saudi Arabian students now studying in Canada will be transferred to other countries.

Samar Badawi is a famed women's right activist and is the sister of Raif Badawi, a blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years for insulting Islam by a Saudi Arabian court in 2014.

Saudi's foreign ministry called the statement "a major, unacceptable affront to the kingdom's laws and judicial process".

Gun-rights activists offer blueprints as 3D-printed weapons fight escalates
Criminals in the comfort of their own homes could fire up their computer, download a file and use a printer to make a gun. In June, the State Department, now led by Trump Secretary of State Mike Pompeo , settled the case with Wilson.

The diplomatic spat between Canada and Saudi Arabia that erupted over the weekend has left many wondering exactly what is going on.

The official Twitter account of Global Affairs Canada also sent out a tweet, on Friday, Aug. 3: "Canada is gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil society and women's rights activists in #SaudiArabia, including Samar Badawi".

Prince Mohammed, heir to the region's most powerful throne, has introduced a string of reforms such as lifting a decades-long ban on women drivers in a bid to overhaul the kingdom's austere image.

Amnesty International noted Ms Badawi has been repeatedly targeted and interrogated by Saudi security forces for her human rights activist. His wife, Ensaf Haidar, lives in Canada and recently became a Canadian citizen.

But Riyadh's singling out of Canada is aimed at strongly discouraging other critical Western governments from speaking out, observers say.

Garry Keller, who was chief of staff to ex-Conservative Foreign Minister John Baird, said the government needed to look at how it could help businesses that might be affected.

The Shura Council in Bahrain, the kingdom's highest legislative body, also issued a statement condemning Canada's interference in Saudi's affairs.
