Hurricane John weakens a little off Mexican coast

Hurricane John weakens a little off Mexican coast

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, the center of Hurricane Hector was approximately 370 miles ESE of South Point at latitude 16.6 N and longitude 150.7 W, moving west at approximately 16 mph.

A tropical storm watch was in effect for a much broader swath of coast, from Los Barilles to Todos Santos. While John is expected to pass west of Baja, an increase in storm size or an eastward jog in the track could bring tropical storm conditions to the region.

Hurricane Hector, while at Category 3 intensity will pass south of Hawaii today into early Thursday, with only some periphery effects expected in the islands.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 miles per hour (95 kph) with higher gusts.

The storm began taking subtropical - not-quite tropical - characteristics, and was named Tuesday morning.

Hurricane Hector, with 130 mph winds, is about 540 miles east-southeast of Hilo.

What's more, an El Nino, an anomalous warming in the tropical Pacific, is likely to develop, the Climate Prediction Center says, and that warming typically generates strong winds from the west that could add to the shearing.

Swells generated by Hector are expected to reach the southeast and east shores of the Big Island and eastern Maui later Wednesday, and produce large and risky surfs.

Rain: Rains from the deep tropical moisture surrounding Hector could affect the Puna and Kau Districts of Hawaii Island, and some of those rain showers may be locally heavy at times, especially on east and southeast-facing slopes. Combined with high tides, this could lead to some overwash of low-lying coastal areas and perhaps some beach erosion.
