US ambassador urges Britain to ditch support for Iran nuclear deal

In an article in the Sunday Telegraph, he said: "It is time to move on from the flawed 2015 deal".

Britain remained open to talks with the USA on how to address concerns about Iran. We want to keep our journalism open and accessible and be able to keep providing you with news and analyses from the frontlines of Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish World. He used the government's Brexit rhetoric to support his case, saying that "global Britain" should use its "considerable diplomatic power and influence" to force a change of approach.

In the latest threat to the US-UK special relationship, the US' top diplomat in Britain has called on London to back its pressure on Iran, warning of "serious consequences" for businesses who flaunt Washington's sanctions.

"The private sector is bound by the decisions that will be made by the Iraqi government in this regard", the Iraqi economic official noted, adding that the volume of trade transactions carried out by Iraqi and Iranian private sectors are valued at more than 5 billion United States dollars annually.

A British Foreign Office official said Sunday, "We remain committed to the nuclear deal".

Woody Johnson, the U.S. ambassador to London, encouraged Britain to stick with the United States and ditch a "flawed" 2015 nuclear deal with Iran even as the European Union openly defied sanctions imposed by the Trump administration.

A week ago Britain signed on to a joint statement with other EU countries that pledged to press on with a strategy to lessen the impact of the US sanctions on European businesses.

The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, joined with his French and German counterparts last week to voice their "deep regret" at Washington's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and vow to protect European companies from USA reprisals if they continue to trade with Iran.

But the United States ambassador, Woody Johnson, urged the UK to rethink its position.

"If the nuclear deal remains alive, the other sides should sell us the fuel and if the nuclear deal dies, then we would feel unimpeded to produce the 20% fuel ourselves", Kamalvandi said.

The comments come days after Mr Trump revealed new sanctions.
