Counsel Don McGahn to Leave White House

Counsel Don McGahn to Leave White House

Donald Trump, the United States president, confirmed his departure in a tweet on Wednesday.

Trump praised McGahn on Wednesday afternoon as an "excellent guy", adding that he has "a lot of affection for Don".

Trump has not settled on a replacement for McGahn, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters.

He was even tasked with overhauling the federal judiciary with conservative judges. McGahn had made a decision to stay on to lead the confirmation process of Kavanaugh, according to sources.

Don McGahn, the White House counsel who reportedly spent 30 hours in interviews with figures in the Russian Federation probe, is to leave in the autumn.

Trump's announcement came more than a week after a New York Times report that McGahn had been cooperating extensively with Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with Trump's Republican campaign.

"Senator Grassley has appreciated Mr. McGahn's work over the last two years and has considered him integral to the President's record-breaking success on filling judicial vacancies".

NYU School Of Medicine To Pay Tuition For All Students
All students enrolled in the MD degree program are eligible, regardless of their financial need or academic performance. In 2017, 119 students matriculated from the medical school, which receives well over 7,000 applications a year.

ABC News' Tara Palmeri and Katherine Faulders contributed reporting to this article. At the time, Trump wanted new lawyers who would push back harder against Mueller's requests.

McGahn did not discuss the issue with Rosenstein and threatened to quit when Trump continued to insist that he do so, the person said.

He was not aware that Trump planned to send the tweet before it posted, according to a person close to McGahn who was not authorised to speak publicly.

The website noted some allies of President Donald Trump fear McGahn gave up too much information to special counsel Robert Mueller's team of investigators.

These discussions reportedly touched on Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey and his focus on putting loyal officials in charge of the investigation, such as Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

He also helped guide Trump's selection of Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and the president's nomination of Kavanaugh and helped oversee a dramatic rollback of Obama era regulations.

The development comes as legal risks to the President rise, following the conviction of his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort last week on fraud charges and his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen's guilty plea to charges of fraud and campaign finance violations.
