Donald Trump Cancels Pay Raises For Federal Employees

Donald Trump Cancels Pay Raises For Federal Employees

Ron Sachs/CNP/AdMedia/NewscomCiting the budget deficit, President Donald Trump said today he is freezing scheduled pay raises for civilian employees of the federal government.

"We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and Federal agency budgets can not sustain such increases", Trump wrote before announcing that for 2019, "both across-the-board pay increases and locality pay increases will be set at zero".

Trump wanted to freeze federal pay in the 2019 budget, but the Senate included a 1.9 percent increase in its plan.

Trump said he was nixing a 2.1 percent across-the-board raise for most workers as well as separate locality pay increases averaging 25.7 percent.

Beyer's office also noted that the congressman "represents the largest number of federal employees of any Member of the House of Representatives". However, in the budget plan he released earlier this year, setting spending priorities for the coming year, Trump indicated he would seek a freeze on federal pay.

Cox said federal worker pay and benefits have been cut by more than $200 billion since 2011, and workers are now earning 5 percent less than they did at the start of the decade. This newfound concern for the fiscal prudence is impossible to credit, given Trump's willingness to create massive deficits and determination to waste money on pet projects like his border wall.

Pay for military personnel will not be affected by Trump's decree; instead, USA troops are due a 2.6% pay increase next year.

Congress does have the option to override Trump's freeze on federal raises.

Trump also said federal employees' compensation should be performance-based as opposed to automatic.

"I have determined that for 2019, both across the board pay increases and locality pay increases will be set at zero", he wrote.

"These alternative pay plan decisions will not materially affect our ability to attract and retain a well-qualified Federal workforce", Trump's letter adds.

That measure, along with a new two-year federal budget and tax cuts heralded by Republicans, have led to accusations Trump is ignoring the federal deficit, despite promising he would address it as president.

30 that he will invoke his emergency authority to freeze pay for civilian federal workers next year, citing strained federal budgets and the need to link workers' pay to their performance. "Across-the-board pay increases and locality pay increases, in particular, have long-term fixed costs, yet fail to address existing pay disparities or target mission critical recruitment and retention goals".
