Trump threatens Congress - Stay out of my plans for NAFTA

Trump threatens Congress - Stay out of my plans for NAFTA

"Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off".

The rift comes after the administration submitted a letter late last week formally notifying Congress that it would enter a trade agreement with Mexico, adding that Canada could be included at a later date "if it is willing". While the law, on average, added an extra $33,000 to the coffers of the richest taxpayers, only two percent of workers reported receiving a pay increase or bonus after their corporate employers benefited enormously. It's unclear whether the authority Trump has to renegotiate NAFTA extends to a deal done with just Mexico, and lawmakers - as well as Mexican officials - continue to stress the need for Canada's inclusion.

"Congress' refusal to ratify a deal without Canada in it weakens Trump's hand, so to achieve his ends, he's attempting to bully not only Canada, but the U.S. Congress as well", he wrote in an email. The president has repeatedly said the northern neighbor isn't necessary in his new trade pact. The U.S. has tremendous upside potential as we go about fixing some of the worst Trade Deals ever made by any country in the world.

Talks on renegotiating the NAFTA began in August 2017 as Trump threatened to withdraw from the trilateral trade deal, which he claimed harmed USA industries and jobs.

Trumka, whose organization is an umbrella group for most unions, said the economies of the US, Canada and Mexico are "integrated" and "it's pretty hard to see how that would work without having Canada in the deal".

He said in a tweet issued on Saturday that it would be left of the new NAFTA if "fair deals for the US" isn't reached.

But under US trade rules, the USA team doesn't have to make public the text of the revamped agreement for 30 additional days, buying more time to reach a deal with the Canadians. However, Canada and the US did not meet the negotiating deadline, and talks are to continue this week. "I think the key decision was freezing Canada out and then negotiating directly with Mexico".

Donald Trump Refuses to Answer McCain Questions In White House
Brit Hume called out the tweet, which says: "My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain ". Instead, Trump issued a brief statement on Twitter Saturday night, that did not mention any of McCain's accomplishments.

He urged the crowd to not let Trump or anyone else divide Americans based on race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation.

The Friday deadline was aimed at getting the deal approved before the December 1 inauguration of Mexico's President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a far-left politician who some fear will scuttle a deal.

Trump celebrated Labor Day on Monday with a tweet saying, "The Worker in America is doing better than ever before". They also announced that they would resume talks on Wednesday after four days of intense negotiations in Washington ended without a final agreement. Ottawa does have other complaints.

But the talks with Canada snagged over the mechanisms used to resolve disputes among partners, and on Ottawa's strictly controlled dairy sector.

Trump's move on Friday to notify Congress that he planned to sign a deal with Mexico in 90 days and would include Canada "if it is willing" appeared to avoid what many in the USA business community and Congress had seen as a worst-case scenario.

When the Trump administration notified Congress past year that it meant to renegotiate NAFTA, critics note that it said it would enter talks with both Canada and Mexico.

In June this year, Washington introduced a 25-percent tariff on steel imports and a 10-percent tariff on aluminum imports from Mexico, Canada and the EU.
