New Yorker drops Steve Bannon from festival lineup after outcry

New Yorker drops Steve Bannon from festival lineup after outcry

David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, announced the news in an email to the magazine's staff on Monday.

The New Yorker has rescinded its invitation to former White House strategist Steve Bannon to its festival after stars like Jim Carrey, Jimmy Fallon, Judd Apatow, John Mulaney, and Patton Oswalt said they were pulling out in protest.

In an earlier phone interview with the Times, Remnick said he had "every intention of asking him hard questions and engaging in a serious and even combative conversation".

Shortly thereafter, Remnick issued a memo to his staff, saying that he had changed his mind and made a decision to drop Bannon from the speakers list.

Steve Bannon's appearance at next month's New Yorker Festival has prompted Jim Carrey, Judd Apatow, and several other prominent speakers to cancel their own scheduled appearances.

"I've changed my mind", Remnick wrote in a memo to staff.

'I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered. In a statement released on Twitter, David Remnick, the magazine's editor, said he had changed his mind after facing criticism on social media.

The New Yorker Disinvites Steve Bannon From Festival After Twitter Uproar

This is a developing story.

Bannon, who was to headline the prestigious festival, denounced Remnick in a statement. This is PT Barnum level horse****.

Bannon - who left the White House in August 2017 in the wake of a deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia - blasted the magazine over its "gutless" decision to remove him from the lineup.

Remnick conceded that the festival was not the best format in which to interview Bannon, and that it could be done "in a more traditional journalistic setting". Everyone, it seemed, was mad at the New Yorker for "normalizing" Steve Bannon, and, perhaps worse, "giving him a platform". I am not so fragile in my beliefs that Steve Bannon or Milo or any one of their ilk will be able to convince me that we should build the wall or lock her up, but if you don't want to be exposed to risky ideas, I'm sure Bo Burnham's talk will be a nice, safe space. Kathryn Schulz was among the New Yorker staff writers who tweeted that they had informed Remnick directly about their objections.

While we're at it, there is also nothing more to learn from the die-hard Trump voters in what I've called the Endless Diner Series - the media's recidivistic journeys to the supposed heartland to hear what we've heard a thousand times before about blind loyalty in the face of all reason.

In response, Bannon called Remnick "gutless". "The question is whether an interview has value in terms of fact, argument, or even exposure, whether it has value to a reader or an audience".
