Lexus rearview mirror cameras will debut in October

Lexus rearview mirror cameras will debut in October

The technology will debut in the redesigned ES sedan that goes on sale in October.

Lexus has taken the technological leap and introduced a camera which replaces the outside rear-view mirror.

Tiny cameras in a thin, rain-proof housing capture footage of what's behind the vehicle and transfer them to screens mounted in the area where the a-pillar meets the dashboard. A new Digital Outer Mirror option will debut on the Lexus ES in the Japanese market this October, and it uses exterior cameras and screens inside the auto to replace the traditional side mirror. It's not just plain feed too - the Digital Outer Mirrors offer an expanded view of the car's surroundings by augmenting the display area during turns or when reversing. Come next month, Lexus will officially launch the "Digital Side-View Monitors" for the all-new ES. The luxury brand has installed small exterior cameras on the front doors, which it says provide drivers with a "clearer view of the vehicle's surrounding area". Whenever the driver uses the car's indicators or engages reverse "the system automatically enhances the corresponding area".

UEFA Nations League preview - Tuesday: Spain v Croatia, Iceland v Belgium
Beating two of the World Cup's semi-finalists in four days leaves Spain top of League A's Group Two in the Nations League. In the 57th minute, Spain captain Sergio Ramos headed in his 14th global goal for the team's fifth on the night.

There are other benefits too, including the cameras being able to resist the buildup of raindrops or snow thanks to their design, and better visibility in all conditions.

- The camera will display the images on a monitor inside the cabin placed at the bottom of the A-pillar. Wind noise has also been reduced, resulting in a quieter cabin.
