Death toll rises to 11 as Florence continues battering US East Coast

Death toll rises to 11 as Florence continues battering US East Coast

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Saturday that despite the downgrade, Florence was still "unloading epic amounts of rainfall" and still very capable of wiping out entire communities.

Water from the Neuse river floods the houses during the pass of Hurricane Florence the town of New Bern, North Carolina, on September 14, 2018.

Florence crashed ashore Friday morning in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, and it has wiped out power to about 796,000 customers in that state and SC, reports CNN.

"We are going to have more evacuation notices as the rivers rise; you need to heed the warnings", Sen. Another person was arrested for allegedly looting an Exxon gas station and convenience store.

North Carolina officials have reported at least seven storm-related fatalities with unconfirmed reports of a further three deaths. His state has already endured record rainfall, with much more forecast to come. The previous record of 24.06 inches was set during Hurricane Floyd in 1999.

The storm has killed at least 11 people in North and SC, authorities said.

To prevent those routes from being flooded, cutting off Horry County and virtually turning the Myrtle Beach area into an island, transportation officials plan to build a mile-long barrier along the Lynches River to keep USA 378 passable. "Let's say you have people inland that you know, they're still having heart attacks and medical calls", he said.

"The fact that there haven't been more deaths and damage is wonderful and a blessing", said Rebekah Roth, walking around Wilmington's Winoca Terrace neighborhood.

In Kinston, N.C., people and businesses were in a precarious situation as the Neuse River went out of its banks during Tropical Storm Florence, Sept. 15, 2018.

A 61-year-old woman was killed late Friday when the vehicle she was driving struck a tree that had fallen across Highway 18 near the town of Union. A man and woman died in Horry County due to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to SC officials.

The National Hurricane Center expects Florence to dump an additional 30-40 inches of rain along the North Carolina coast and produce flash flooding.

As Florence lingers over east SC, officials are keeping an eye on areas prone to flooding.

Members of the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force search a flooded neighbourhood for evacuees during Hurricane Florence in Fairfield Harbour, North Carolina. The ships are expected to start their return on Sunday, the Navy said.

He says waiting out a storm can also deplete resources.

"There is flooding "everywhere in the city", he said".

Volunteers and city workers have been filling sandbags, trying to plug a low point in the city's levee system before the Lumber River crests. People in nearby communities are being told to get to higher ground.

Firefighters said the area had not been in the zone under evacuation orders.

Elsewhere in the Charlotte region, household power outages include more than 3,200 in York County, more than 4,500 in Union County and more than 3,500 in Gaston County, Duke said.

A day after Florence blew ashore in North Carolina with 90 miles per hour winds, more than 2 feet of rain had fallen in places, and the drenching went on and on, with forecasters saying there could be an additional 1½ feet by the end of the weekend. Florence will likely become a remnant low within 36 hours.
