Kenyan Kipchoge shatters marathon world record in Berlin

Kenyan Kipchoge shatters marathon world record in Berlin

Eliud Kipchoge crosses the line to win the 45th Berlin Marathon and set a new world record in the process.

"I lack the words to describe how I feel", said Kipchoge, whose winning margin over Amos Kipruto in second place was nearly five minutes. It was really hard, but I was truly prepared to run my own race.

That 10km time was 23 seconds faster than Dennis Kimetto's world record pace, but Kimetto ran an incredibly fast second half.

But, at the 30km mark Kipchoge was 52 seconds ahead of WR pace and the magic 2:02:57 mark was within sight again.

"So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", Kipchoge, who previous year took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers.

Attracting attention from all over the athletics world, Kipchoge's achievement is already being spoken of in the highest terms. "So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", said Kipchoge, who had won in Berlin in 2015 and 2017. As he he's done in his other major victories, Kipchoge smiled through any signs of pain by the time he hit 40K in 1:55:32.

The XS will also have a dual camera system, which promises a sharper camera when combined with an A12 bionic chip inside. The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max also get a new Gold colour option, apart from Space Grey and Silver.

The women's race was understandably overshadowed by Kipchoge's heroics, but 35-year-old Kenyan Gladys Cherono had herself a marvelous day in Berlin as well.

The final pacemaker, Josphat Boit, led Kipchoge through the half-way point in 1:01:06 before dropping out at 25 kilometres, covered in 1:12:24.

Kipchoge came agonisingly close to sporting immortality by almost running the first sub two-hour marathon previous year.

The 33-year-old Olympic marathon champion had the world record in the bag with plenty of room left to run.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge stands in front of a clock displaying his time after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record with 2h01m39s on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin".
