Coca-Cola in talks to create marijuana-infused ‘wellness drinks’

Coca-Cola in talks to create marijuana-infused ‘wellness drinks’

Citing unnamed sources Bloomberg today claimed that Coca-Cola is set to work with Aurora Cannabis on wellness drinks containing CBD, a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Sales in USA legal markets should almost triple to US$16 billion by 2020 from US$5.4 billion in 2015, according to market research firm Euromonitor International, and Constellation says cannabis globally could be worth US$200 billion in 15 years.

Coke's possible foray into the marijuana sector comes as beverage makers are trying to add cannabis as a trendy ingredient while their traditional businesses slow.

"There's a lot of interest from consumer-packaged goods, and liquor and tobacco companies to look at cannabis as a new growth vector".

Coca-Cola says it's eyeing the growing market for health drinks infused with cannabidiol - or CBD - but has made no decisions.

Aurora shares spiked as much as 19 per cent in early trading.

After losing to Croatia in the semi-finals in Russia, England were also beaten by Belgium in the third-place playoff. The England captain was livid after Danny Welbeck saw his 97th-minute strike chalked off for a foul.

Two weeks later, spirits company Constellation Brands announced a new $4 billion in investment in Canada's Canopy Growth in exchange for a 38 percent stake in Canopy.

Molson Coors Brewing Co.is starting a joint venture with Quebec's Hydropothecary Corp.to develop cannabis drinks in Canada.

Coca-Cola has already been diversifying as consumption of soda continues to decline.

Aurora was up more than 15% in early trading Monday following the report. Rather, the American beverage giant may target consumers seeking to ease inflammation and related pain by using a legal chemical found in the pot plant that's called CBD and is unrelated to the psycoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. It has been used to treat epilepsy and other maladies.

Several U.S. states have legalized marijuana but it remains against federal law.

Coke and Aurora, in separate statements, each said they were interested in cannabidiol-infused beverages but would not comment on any specifics or talks. The Edmonton, Alberta-based company has soared along with other pot stocks in Canada as the country gears up to become the first Group of Seven nation to legalize cannabis on October 17.
